Cindi,

I have been told this several times by several different people, including staff. Teachers will be scheduled to go to library every 2-3 weeks!
This is BAIT & SWITCH
Take away recess, art, vocal music, library, IT as daily and weekly part of curriculum, then offer them back in along with a couple of others (foreign language, etc) and call it ENHANCED PROGRAMING!

THIS IS BS!

My child is in lower el and already had recess (twice a day) and weekly...art, vocal music, PE, computers (that's what they call it). Now are these going to be regarded as specials for the 5/6 group?

How is this a Bait & Switch??

Mrs. Alles was quite clear that the schedule and frequency and all the other details have not been worked out yet. How can someone tell you that the kids will go to the library every 2-3 weeks, when we don't even know what teachers will be in what buildings???

The are offering the same thing they offer the kids today: gym, art, and music, with additional language, computer graphics, instrumental music and IT classes. The art and music definitely sounded "enhanced" to me, and the IT they discussed is not the same thing as "computer lab".

How is this not enhanced? And why is it BS? Because we lost the injunction and the LI is moving forward, and the administration held a focus group to get parents' input on what we wanted the specials to look like????

Michelbel,
It is bait and switch because...
They are taking away afternoon recess, shortening lunch recess, taking away weekly art, vocal music, library, etc
and them offering them back as a choice alsong with instrumental music, intro to foriegn language/culture, etc.

Also, I have been told personally, by a couple of teachers and a librarian that this is what they are hearing-teachers will schedule their class to go to the library once, every two or three weeks. I believe them much more readily than I believe Admis.

These focus groups are nothing more than a PR move. They know they did not communicate well with the whole introduction of the LI. Now they are trying to make it look like we actually have some say. What a joke! After we're all done with these focus groups, they will come back and tell us what they are going to do. I'm sure it will be the same thing they have wanted to do all along.

One more thing Michelbel,

Whether or not we lost the motion for an injuction has nothing to do with my feelings surrounding this focus group/specials. As has been the case all along--they don't want community input, they just want to make it look like they do. A smart PR move apparently...

I don't believe the "offerings" at the 5/6 level will be anything worthwhile. They took away instrumental music before and they can take it away again. I don't trust them nor do I believe them when they "promise" things to our children.
I think I lot of parents will feel different about the "supposed specials" this fall.
I predict there will be a lot of parents complaining about the 5/6 set-up.

The LI will NOT solve the district's financial problems. It is a bad plan for the future of LPS. Cuts will have to be made in the future. Where do you think they will make them? Stayed tuned.....

Does anyone know if the instruments offered will be new or used? It sounds like a big expense.

They are not called specials at my child's school, at least not in the lower el and that is what I was referring too.

I have 2 lower el students. And both of them say specials.
Sorry I guess each school is different.

Well like I said, mine doesn't. And as a frequent volunteer at my child's school, I have never heard them called "specials" by the teacher, my child, or other parents.

So what do they call them at your school?

By their names...music, art, gym, and computer lab. They also give parents a note at the beginning of the year to let us know what days they have music, art, gym, and computer lab. You can also add library once a week too. Forgot about that!
