I thought this post from a special ed parent needed to be moved. More people need to know what's really going on! Please Read!!!!! 5th Grade Group: Members Posts: 27 Member No.: 331 Joined: 2-March 06 What is going on is that Churchill has 2 special ed programs. CTP(Churchill transition program) and Center based program. The CTP program is for Livonia kids and kids out of area that decided to opt for the great program. The center based is for Livonia only. Those kids can stay but the 72 in the ctp program is going to Franklin. I chose the ctp program because it is a mix of life skills and academics, which is what my daughter needs. The center based is pretty much all academics. They say there is more room at Franklin. There will be alot of money involved with this move. Although funding is different for special ed it is just not the best thing. We voiced our opinions at meetings but it fell on deaf ears much like the boe meetings. They lied (special ed directors) and said that we could have another meeting before they decided what they would do. The next thing we knew it was a done deal. We were shown 2 rooms at Franklin that they would have next year. They said a new bathroom would be built to accommodate the needs of some kids. I dont trust them either when they promise things will be in place for next year. In 11th and 12th grade, they insist on a satellite program for them. They are currently doing it now. The satellite program is this: For 1/2 of the day (they are doing this now) a bus picks the kids up and takes them to Franklin. This is supposed to be community based instruction. We want this stopped before our kids get to that point. Not many like it now. They refuse to stop this ass nine program. My daughter is on the bus for long enough and there is no need for this. Just think of the money that could be saved...bus, driver, gas..........We dont want it!! Save the Money that we so desperately need!! They did not care at all when I have written, emailed etc. about the fact that these kids are being discriminated against! That is my opinion anyway. I dont know if this helped at all. Its so hard to write the whole situation down. Hopefully when all of this is over, we can all get together and meet to tell our stories. My daughter does not want to leave her friends, both in special ed and regular ed. She does know what is going on and does not like it. She wakes up with a smile every morning and cant wait to go to school. I am worried about her for next year though. Thanks for listening! Keep up the great work! We appreciate all you are doing. Matt and I will give it our all here in the Garfield area to get this school board out of here!!! |

Special Ed. students have legal rights that others don't. Ask about it at your school. They should give you a paper that you can use to get help... Look online or contact an organization that specializes in legal rights and discrimination. Of course continue trying to talk to the BOE... or Liepa... enough said... |

That could be costly. I believe there are other organizations that do it for free for special ed kids. |

The problem is that the program will no longer exist at Churchill. It will be at Franklin. I could keep her at Churchill in the center program, but it is not what is appropriate for her. |

Liepa attended 1 meeting and sat there and let the 2 men in charge of special ed do all the talking and answering. When it comes to special ed, Leipa and the boe dont know anything!!! |
