Seems to me they will have little choice but either increase class size or have portables at Hoover.

Will people PLEASE stop saying that Hoover is going to need portables. The school is built to hold over 800 kids (which it held back in the 70's). There will NOT be 800 students at Hoover next year (even without people putting their children in Private school). The parents that were at the Open House on Monday found out that the art and music rooms will stay in the classrooms that are allotted to them now. There is more than enough available space in Hoover. Most classrooms have 27 students in them now. What is the complaint here? If you are looking for smaller classes then Private school is sure to disappoint. I hear that the class size is much larger on average and I know when I was in private school there were 37 students in my class.

I WENT to Hoover in the early 70's and there is no way there were 800 kid's in that school. There were not even 100 kid's in my grade level. Sorry to disappoint you.

I am not trying to offend anyone here. I am just asking if the class sizes could be 35. Was it said that the class sizes will be between 27 and 35 Monday at the Hoover open house?

I work with someone who attended the Hoover open house. They told me that it was NOT said that the class sizes would be 27 - 35.

Can we find out what the sizes will be? ( Just for the record). She also said there were several "groups" that toured the school, and could not speak for them all.

I have to agree with the private school thing, their classes are huge. I have a friend who's kids go to st mikes. I thought the teachers dont have a contract yet, so how can class size be determined?

Just to clarify, St. Mike's largest class size is 34.

She didnt tell me how many were in a class but 34 doesnt seem huge. I guess alot has to depend on the grade level.

The classroom numbers came from the district last year when Hoover was celebrating their 40th anniversary. PTA researched the history of the school and recieved a school population count for ALL 40 years. There were 863 kids in 1968 (okay, I admit that I made a mistake on the year, but the school can hold the kids coming, no problem).

My question is how many classrooms will be open next year when the 5/6 graders will be gone?

Approx..there are 450 kids in Hoover now and 400 in Taylor..per standard and poors. Of course that is including the current 5/6 graders now.

There are only about 125 kids more coming than current count at Hoover now according to the school Principal.

You might also want to check at St. Gen's. They have small class sizes.

And btw, the catholic schools we looked at...they cap the classroom sizes! Some cap them at 25! So not all private schools have large classrooms! Very unfair statement!

Also, I have said it before and it still holds true. Private schools can hand choose their kids and ask them to leave as well. Larger class sizes in a parochial school is MUCH different than in a public school. When I was a sub I subbed at St. Mike's and LOVED it and they had a full class. The children were WONDERFUL and the staff was fantastic. It truly is apples and oranges and I am proud to be a public school teacher! :)
