I just heard from a Hoover mom that she was directly told at the open house Monday that the class sizes would be 27-35. Can someone expand on this that was there please. |

We have just begun to fight!

I believe the contracts allow for a maximum class size of 35. If this is true, then they can, and will, utilize everything that is allowable per the contract to accomodate the LI. |

Seems to me they will have little choice but either increase class size or have portables at Hoover. They may luck out though and have a large number move to private school and save the day so neither option is needed. I am contributing to this cause by putting my daughter in private school. They should send me a thank you card... |

I believe it because this is no aquaintance, this is someone I know and trust. She said ask if I don't believe it. That is what I am doing. Did anyone else hear this Monday?? Class sizes between 27-35? This would explain why we would not need portables? |

Grant1, I believe you are right. The contracts say the class size can be up to 35 children, if I am correct. The number is slightly smaller for kindergardeners, I do believe. I do not know of any classes that are this big though. Most classes are much smaller. Let's say next year a elementary class has 32 kids in it, LPS will still say they are keeping the class size smaller because they have less than 35 students. |

Will people PLEASE stop saying that Hoover is going to need portables. The school is built to hold over 800 kids (which it held back in the 70's). There will NOT be 800 students at Hoover next year (even without people putting their children in Private school). The parents that were at the Open House on Monday found out that the art and music rooms will stay in the classrooms that are allotted to them now. There is more than enough available space in Hoover. Most classrooms have 27 students in them now. What is the complaint here? If you are looking for smaller classes then Private school is sure to disappoint. I hear that the class size is much larger on average and I know when I was in private school there were 37 students in my class. |

I have to agree with the private school thing, their classes are huge. I have a friend who's kids go to st mikes. I thought the teachers dont have a contract yet, so how can class size be determined? |

Where did you get the information about Hoover holding 800 in the 70's? I grew up in that area from the age of 9 and lived literally a block from Hoover from 1969 to 1978. I went to Henry Clay, which opened in 1969 to take some of the student load off Hoover. All the kids in my neighborhood that lived south of my house went to Hoover. I do not believe there were ever 800 students at Hoover. Where did that come from? |

I am not trying to offend anyone here. I am just asking if the class sizes could be 35. Was it said that the class sizes will be between 27 and 35 Monday at the Hoover open house? |

I distinctly remember being told by the Demographics Committee that the average class sizes will be maintained under the LI. They BETTER come through on that promise! |

What do they consider the average class size? Is it 24, 26, 28, 30? I do not trust them on anything! |

My question is how many classrooms will be open next year when the 5/6 graders will be gone? Approx..there are 450 kids in Hoover now and 400 in Taylor..per standard and poors. Of course that is including the current 5/6 graders now. And btw, the catholic schools we looked at...they cap the classroom sizes! Some cap them at 25! So not all private schools have large classrooms! Very unfair statement! |

LPS Demographics Committee web site, 11/2/05 update: http://www.livonia.k12.mi.us/demographic/faq.html The anticipated savings from staffing is $2,400,000 and includes administrators, secretaries, custodians, building supervisors, media specialists, learning specialists, and paraprofessionals. The savings do not include a reduction in classroom teachers, as they will be needed in other schools to maintain our existing class size ratios. If I remember right, I think that Ms. Alles said at the Demo Committee presentation to the BOE that the average was somewhere in the mid-20's. I am looking for it and will post if I find it. Interestingly, there are no minutes from that meeting posted. |
