Here's another letter sent to the Detroit News with valid points that I thought I would share with you (a friend of ours wrote it.) Let me reiterate what others have pointed out...it's not that a newspaper can't print an "editorial" piece, but they should at least get their facts right and if they do not wish to fact check and proof read the material they wish to print, then they have to be willing to accept the consequences...which may range from phone calls expressing a citizens displeasure in the article, letters to the editor, or cancellation of a subscription to get the point across that someone needs to be held accountable for erroneous statements published in a newspaper. Sirs, and Ms. Burzynski, I have had a lot of respect for your newspaper and the articles you post, most of the time. I don't have a lot of time to go into details, but you need to reign in one of your "journalists" who put out a VERY irresponsible piece yesterday March 7th, concerning the recall of the Livonia School Board and the possible lawsuit to stop the "Legacy" plan they quickly pushed through a week or so before Christmas. Seeing this in the paper and knowing the history behind this mess that was created by our Livonia School Board made me, my wife and many of our friends extremely angry at YOUR paper… I am also angry at you for NOT watching what your writers put in … Is anybody responsible for proof reading what someone enters as "The Editorial Board's Comments" ? Did we even see any of your people at our School board meetings ? Did they even notice that 300-500 people were pleading for the board to reconsider the only plan on the table? To save one half to 1% by putting the whole Livonia school area in complete disarray and inconveniencing a high majority of the families with grade school children…. Does your journalist … and I use that term loosely, have their head under a bushel basket ? (I choose to use a more polite term than I really wanted to) Don't try to write about something that you obviously don't know about or don't care to report fairly for both sides! A lot of our friends are stopping their subscriptions to your paper. My wife wanted us to do the same. If I do not see any form of apology or retraction for this type of journalism I must too concede that your paper is not worth reading. If there are more appropriate personnel this should have gone too, please forward accordingly. One of your many disappointed readers, |

Legacy will be a defining issue for many people for some time to come. If your selling to people in Livonia, or want our votes, you'd best pay attention.

The board is not obligated to follow precedent, or else Livonia > students would still attend one-room schools. > > However, the deal saves money and is a beacon of innovation in a sea of > inaction elsewhere around the state. School officials did exactly what > they are elected to do -- lead the community to prepare for an uncertain > economic future. They showed political courage and made > tough-but-necessary calls." |

What don't you understand about the difference between a biased editiorial(happens often, either way) vs. information that is portrayed as factual but is very inaccurate? The newspaper editor is held to a different standard, or should be, than someone posting on an open forum. |
