I took a drive around the city today---something I think the BOE should do---and saw red and white signs everywhere I went.

I drove by a few elementary schools that I didn't know existed and very quickly felt very sad. When this city built "our" elementary schools, they took care to build them tucked away inside the neighborhoods. Many of them are so tucked away they are hard to find. I couldn't help thinking how different our city will be without these unique neighborhood schools---schools that set us apart from other surrounding communities.

The city council should be concerned about these vacant buildings because of where they are situated (within established neighborhoods). If you take Hull elementary, for example, what would you put there (besides an elementary school)? The only thing that would make any sense at all would be single family homes. Where are Hull children being routed with the LI? It's so sad.....

And if we built single family homes, where would the kids go to school? It is so sad! The very foundation of our City Planners were to build subdivisions around elementary schools.

Shortly after the announcement of the LI, I e-mailed all the CC members urging they do something to help stop the plan, if possible. I believe all did respond advising me they had no legal jurisdiction on school issues. It seemed clear to me that they did not want to be associated with it as it might cause political damage to their elected positions in the future. Two or three of them expressed thier disappointment with the plan. Mayor Engebretson responed as well reminding me he didn't have any vote on the matter - and didn't express his feelings towards it either way. Obviously, he now has very wisely made is position clear on the matter and I feel will be re-elected for it. I feel others though on the CC are going to be effected next election if we don't know where they all stand on this, the largest school change Livonia has ever experienced.

I guess the builders would attract families that have no children.

What is LPS/City doing to attract young families to Livonia? It seems as though
LPS has accurately predicted their future by implementing a plan that does nothing to increase enrollment in the years to come. LI=declining enrollment.

There have been no developers/builders who are willing to work with the city to build single family starter homes. Every one of them wants to either build these mega houses ( like on the northwest side of town ) or make cluster/condo housing. These are the only ones that make them the profit margins they want without having the city give them tax breaks and concessions to make it worth thier while.

It is a shame because the city master plan has been grossly deviated from by doing this. The city is also quite vocal about providing homes for "empty nesters". You have seen/heard how Livonia is a community that retirees do not want to move out of since it is the cheapest place to live, with the most services, and the most access, in the entire southeast metro area. This is why the city keeps approving cluster and condo housing developments over giving the developers incentives to build single family starter homes.

Grant1 makes very accurate observations here. The City does not have the nerve to stand up to the developers and say no to these cluster subdivisions they put in. And the developers and ultimately the City's excuse that they are building for empty nesters is critically wrong because these cluster homes are still more expensive than many of the homes the seniors are in... Needless to say that when they move they take on the higher tax rate because of proposal A.

But you won't change the CC's mind until you take the developers money out of their campaigns!

I simply can't watch the meeting tonight. It would be great if we could get a few people to watch these things, then comment on them here.
