As we can see, this varies widely according to the individual teacher parent relationship. We communicate with many of our kids teachers through email but that is still different from the program I am speaking of...

Someone called it the"Pinnacle Internet Viewer" and I believe that it does not force the TWO way communication of an email, but rather, any grade that my child gets is entered into both their grade book and an electronic grade book, that does is open to the parent at any time over the net.

This allows me, without bugging the teacher and waiting for a reply, to log in, see what my daughter got on her math test this week, see what her grade avg for the card marking is to date, and then lock her in her room with her math book if so needed.

While Teachers are very likely to be willing to communicate through email, my email to the teacher requires:
1) them to have time to read it
2) them to look up her grade on the test and then maybe figure out her grade to date
3) then to reply...

If 20 parents are doing this, it takes away from the time she has for her number one concern... educating our children whether she's planning tomorrows lesson or whatever.

One reply said that it is available at Churchill? At the open House at Franklin the counselor was unaware of it when asked about it and did not think that it was up and running there... It should be district wide at all grade levels..

And of course, conferences should be done in person...

Thanks for listening... (errr reading!)

I read Mrs. M's comment about CHS having this up and running with interest. I am already on their email list and have never heard of this program. When I asked my high school student, she said that she had one teacher vaguely mention it last year but has heard nothing since. I have already emailed her VP to ask about the program and if it is up and running what the PIN number is. I love the idea of this program and wish all of our schools had it. I know of many other districts (some struggling more than Livonia financially ) that are running these programs, kids can even look up their homework for the week on-line. I wonder if the program is tied to some kind of grant?

My experience with teachers using email to communicate is what many others have already stated. Some teachers respond promptly (older, experienced teacher) and state it is their preferred method of communication while it has been like pulling teeth to get other teachers to respond within 7 days (younger, less responsive to parents kind of teacher).

Ahh yes...as CMIC said, we do it in Farmington and there is a little control in the program which allows the teacher to let parents/students "SEE" the grade...many of my fellow teachers are skeptical of posting the grades, thus, they check the box in the program which will NOT show the grades (much discussion as to a parent simply "seeing" the grade versus explaining it, discussing rubrics etc..). It has been a struggle to get this program to work properly....although I like the fact I can email a progress report at any given time...that saves me a lot of time..

My son will go to Frost in September and when we went to the open house two weeks ago, many of the teachers acted as if they did not know what I was talking about when I asked them if they post grades and use a program like the one we use in Farmington. Even so, we are very excited to be at Frost for the upcoming year, and maybe I will encourage my son to have his own "gradekeeper" which HE will monitor and update. Maybe even tie some type of home consequence for maintaining it, that way I won't need to check the grades online.

And at the same time teach your child to take ownership of his learning. I love it! :)

I am still trying to figure out who the heck you are!!!!

As Mr. Teacher and cmic have said, I too have seen these systems. For me, the greatest value would be for the Jr and Sr high school levels.

Then again, there is overhead involved in terms of training, tech support and additional resources to put a system like this up.

The training was very sparse! LOL Ask any frustrated Farmington teacher.

Such critter is already out there. CHS parents are able to access up-to-date reports on attendance, homework assignments, test grades and their child's current grade. All information is arranged by class hour and is quite thorough! I would think the other high schools have the same animal. Maybe? Maybe parents don't know about it...inquire at parent teacher conferences this Wednesday. Make sure you're on your highschool's mailing list for info!

I have two boys at CHS and have not been told about this! I have a heck of a time getting my sons grades from the teachers!! I have to have my sons get a sheet signed every Friday from each teacher with their grades writen down.Often the teachers dont even fill out the sheets all the way. I will be calling Churchill on Monday to see if this does exsist. If it does you can bet I will use it and I will be telling as many parents as I can because they all have the same problem.
By the time parent recieve a progress report its to late.I have been pulling my hair out trying to stay up on grades!
I do know that this system is available at Ladywood! (my nextdooor neighbor works their).

We need a new BOE that is more updated. Come on! This stuff is a joke, LPS not being in "the loop". There are parents that don't ues email, for them, send home the paper. For the rest of us that have signed up on an emaill address, use it!

With all due respect c3hull, I would urge you not to jump to conclusions. Some here say that Churchill has a system similar to what is being spoken of (I have no idea if this is true or not). It would not be that unusual to pilot a system in one school before jumping into it throughout a district. Secondly, we don't know what may have been on the table in terms of proposal for this and then scrapped as the budget has been cut. Thirdly, is the BOE to blame for everything? Even on the start times thread someone was directing their anger for start/end times to the BOE, as if they had put the proposal on the table themselves.

Just want things to be kept in proper perspective.

I was reading the posts this morning and started thinking that it kind of feels like we the parents and the BOE are going through a bitter divorce and fighting for the custody of our children while wanting to keep our homes as well.

Does anyone else feel this way?

I don't believe the BOE is all bad. They have done good things in the past, yet their current behavior and poor judgement has made it really hard for me to remember any of their finer points or glowing moments. All I see are faces of people that don't want anything to do with the people they serve and are on a power kick right now. Let's end this and go back to the table! :)

Good Points mom, it's easy for us all to jump to conclusions... the idea behind this topic was to examine what works and is useful and what we may benefit from in the future...

It sounds as though this internet program to stay on top of children's progress is a big hit with this group... But DUH... we are online talking about so I guess I would have expected that from US... LOL

I do feel this way! I said this before that the only ones who really wins in this battle are the attornies. Everyone stuffers. The parents, the BOE, the staff and most of al the kids. To me the BOE for the most part are good people, to me they are very stubborn! They really forgot who the heck they really as suppose to me working for, and it's not suppose to the LEA or Dr. Liepa, it's us. Dr. Liepa has said to me that he works for the BOE. I really don't see it. They do what ever LPS wants them to do. So they made there choice and now we have to make ours. Unfortumately, they will be recalled and we will have our schools back.

CHS parents, the Pinnacle Internet Viewer has indeed been out there for several months. Last year a few teachers were using the grade and attendance program on the internet. Some tech and internet savvy teachers have created their own web site, and of course provide links from their school/staff web site. (You should know if one of your child's teacher does that) I know numerous elementary and middle school teachers have also created their own web site for the parents and students to access.

As you have undoubtedly realized each teacher is different. Some teachers even access their LPS email in the evening! (From the quiet of their homes.) Many teachers do indeed commit more than 40 hours per week!

Remember to inquire as to your child's PIN number at parent teacher conferences and bring a good book!

I am calling my sons counsler first thing Monday morning to see if any of their teachers do this. Between my two sons they have twelve different teachers. I cant wait to see how many out of the twelve do this.If they do I will also be asking why I wasnt informed of this. The counsler is aware of the fact that I have been having a hard time getting an update on grades and test scores from the teachers and like I said before this has never been brought to my attention.Even if it is a test to see if it works I would have liked to have known about it.I will post the information that I recieve as soon as i get it.I will also let you all know how many teachers out of twelve are participating.
