Petition Signing; What are you hearing?

I am not an LI supporter, but let me tell you what I am hearing when I ask people to sign.....

1. My kids are in Catholic School. They already have to ride the bus forever, and they have to switch busses at one of the schools along the way. What are you complaining about?

2. The MEGA SCHOOLS aren't a big deal. If Riley can handle 900 kids now, why can't it handle them if they are 2 years younger.

3. Something had to be done.

4. You elected them to make decisions like this. You should accept their choices.

5. I am sure that the professionals know more about this than you do, so I am going with their decision.

6. It doesn't affect me, I don't have kids in LPS.

7. Typical American. Hire a lawyer when you don't like how something is going.

8. What are you teaching your children? That if they can't get things they way they want them they should sue? You need to accept that life will involve some changes.

9. They aren't closing my school, and if they have to pick a new plan, they might choose to close mine instead.

Ok, so there you have it. Those are some of the reasons I have gotten for people not signing. I have also had one person refuse to sign because a member of the BOE lives on their street, and they are afraid of reprisals.
(at least that was the reason they gave)

I have heard some of these responses, too. But the majority are more than happy to sign.

I suspect response is based on what part of the school district you live in.

My neighbors are NOT HAPPY with the BOE!!!!!!!!!!

See you on election day!

Personally I feel sorry for those who would respond like that. It shows that they are not involved, not informed, take democracy for granted, roll over and play dead like a possum, made choices to send thier kids to Catholic Schools so they should not comment on those who did not make that choice, more worried about thier own backyard than the entire city, etc, etc, etc...

It is a shame that persons like this are the reason we may be in the mess we are.

But on the bright side, I have only run into 1 out of 10 who have to stop and think about signing or not singing, the rest sign immediately, and have run into even fewer who would make a comment like those. Yes, I have had a few polite refusals due to thier own personal reasons, but it is far a few between.

Just got a signature today from a man who called us from the flyer we left on his door. He was more than happy to sign! Says we need to keep our cause in the paper more! That is how he is getting his info. He was amazed at the facts on the flyer from CFLF. That is what made him sign.

Says his kids are all grown and moved to other states...and that it doesnt affect him personally that the school is closing in our neighborhood.....but doesnt like the fact that they are pushing so hard for such litte results!

Even though it does not affect him personally in a certain way.....he can see that it is not good for the City of Livonia!

We have had no problems at all. Someone actually even stopped us on the street to ask if she could sign it!

That’s really the first I have heard of one person getting all those responses Hippo. I have had one person say no because the "BOE" are her friends. Other than that everyone has signed enthusiastically. Maybe its because I live in a neighborhood that has a school closing.

Grant1,

You are right on target, IMHO.

It is good to hear that my experiances are not typical (your mileage may vary) ;)~

One concern that I've heard: "I don't want my name to be seen on there for fear that my child might be treated differently."

If someone was to pick your name out of a list of 12,000 names and treat your child "differently" one of 2 things would happen. You would be slapped with a lawsuit, or I'll see you out back behind the shed!

We were out in the Kennedy area today. Lots of seniors were home and signed. One woman thanked us for petitioning. You could tell she was really sincere. :D

My wife was talking to a coworker yesterday. Her coworker mentioned she was having her hair done and saw another woman with a RECALL button on.

She then said she wished she could buy one. My wife then started laughing and told her they were all made in our basement :).

Of course, after that she made my wife promise to bring in a petition for her to sign. ;)
