This was in the Hoover newletter today, from the principal -

QUOTE -

I've reveived a diagram from the district for the intended parking lot renovation for next year. The north parking lot by the swings will be expanded to become the new student pick-up and drop-off area. A sidewalk is also planned so students will have a safe walk from the drop off area. Parent parking spots will also be included in the north lot. The lot in front of the school will only be used for busses with a few staff parking spaces.

To me is doesn't seem like there will be any additional parking spaces next year. Very Interesting!

2greatkids,

I'm interested in knowing how you made the leap from - the parking lot will be EXPANDED to

If they expand the parking lot up to the buliding line, moving the swings and slide WAY in from where they currently are, that will allow for quite a bit more parking. Besides, you don't need to park at the school on a regular basis - you are suppose to Drop Off or Pick Up your child, not stay for the day. Also, Hoover was built to hold a LOT more kids then are currently there or proposed to be there next year and they didn't have an expanded parking lot back then.

This is another example of taking positive information and putting a negative spin on it to stir up emotions.

I used to spend YES the entire day at the school. NO I was not on the payroll, just a concerned and interested parent; willing to give the day for the betterment of our kids. And I needed to drive because I had kids at other schools and needed transportation if I was needed elsewhere.

Back then was too long ago! That was in the days of neighborhood schools, stay at home moms, and walking to school from the neighborhood.

I think what you get at Taylor......is parents park...and walk their kids to the door. They also wait for them at the door to pick up as well. Not everyone...but alot do. So there is a great need for parking spots. Parents like to chat and spend those few extra minutes with the kids. I think that is the concern about the parking. And I dont think alot of parents will put their children on the bus....its not that far to drive to.

I hope you dont think that Taylor parents are being difficult. I think there is just so much anxiety over this whole situation. I personally dont mind my child attending Hoover.....its all the other crap that i hate. I am not thrilled that the principle is going over there either....but that is my opiniion. I know people like her.

The EXPANDED quote did not come from me. They are making the north lot a pickup/drop of area with parking. What I was saying was that (to me) there won't be any more spaces next year than there is this year, because of adding the pickup/drop off area. And yes, I do park at the school on a regular basis. I prefer to walk my children to the doors in the morning and walk up in the afternoon. I don't appreciate you jumping to conclusions about what I was saying, I wasn't putting any kind of negative spin on anything. It was MY opinion.

Iliveon-Levandownbytheriver - I agree with you, that is how I feel at Hoover. I don't think that is being difficult. I think we just care about our kids and their safety.

It just sounds like they are moving things around. The expansion will be for a drop off lane. The south parking lot will not be used by parents only busses and staff. I dont see how that will increase many spaces. Dont forget this will be a lower elementary school, and OF COURSE parents will walk their kids up to the door and pick them up from the door so parking will be needed on a regular basis. I don't know how that translates into staying at school all day. I didn't know that there were parents that actually did that!!!!! YIKES!!!!!!! I have to be at school at 3:15 to get a space and trust me, I would rather be spending that half hour doing other things besides sitting in a parking lot, but if I get there any later I dont have a space. Just my 2 cents

Its like that at Taylor too. If you want a spot...or to be far up in line to pick up the kids.....you have to get there about a half hour early. I think the parking is going to be a big issue....if they are not adding spots.

Like everything else in this plan.....not enough planning ahead. They just dont think about this stuff do they? The hard part is Levan is divided there....is it backed up now? And I have picked up my son at Holmes...and go down Levan and use the side streets....alot of kids walk...its going to be really congested I think.

How is parking during an event? I wonder how Oquist will handle this? Like everything else?

Parking during an event is terrible. Both parking lots are jam packed with people parked every which way. The one good thing is we can use the Fairway Farms lot across the street during events. I used to park on Levan but I heard now people are getting tickets. You have every right to be concerned about the parking and so do all of the other Taylor parents. Most Hoover parents are also concerned of course except for the chosen few, that somehow dont see the problem, but WHATEVER!!!!! I wish I could tell you that everything will be fine with the parking situation next year but I cant. We will just have to wait and see like everything else!!!!!!

On the topic of the Hoover parking lot, I agree that parking is an issue - as it is at most schools. One thought that keeps coming to mind however, is that in merging Hoover and Taylor the projected student count is approximately 100 - 125 more students than are currently at Hoover (since the 5th and 6th grades from both schools will be at Riley.) So try to keep in mind that although the number of cars in the lot will increase, it is not going to be "double."

As far as riding the bus goes - In the 6 years that my kids have been riding the bus it has been not only safe, but a great part of the day where they sit and talk with the other kids in the neighborhood, or other kids in their class at school. The first time my kids took the bus, I was very nervous and I drove to their school where I waited in my car to watch them get off the bus and walk safely into the school. It gave me peace of mind, and also showed me that not only could they do it, but they were happy to be with their friends. OK, if I am really going to be honest, I followed the bus SEVERAL times to really be sure!

Honestly, riding the bus to school has been a postive experience for my children and is actually a very important part of their socialization with other kids each day.

Valid point about saying the 5/6 group won't be there (less kids)

Now, these older siblings are gone. I know parents may have let a youngster walk to school with "an older kid", be it a neighbor or a sibling. I don't know if that will be true with with the 5/6 er not there??? There may be parents driving now...that hadn't before.

Simple fact is that most Taylor Parents will drive.....Perhaps some will change their minds if it becomes too difficult, but those first few days are destined to be crazy...

I am really glad your kids have had such a positive experience on the bus. I hope if mine have to ride, they will too. (But not too much fun!!!)

I guess I'm mostly concerned with the safety issues. If you don't mind me asking, what main roads do your kids busses travel on and for how long?

My kid's do not go to Hoover, they go to Randolph. It will be a long bus ride down busy Newburgh road in the a.m. to Johnson and up busy Newburgh road in the afternoon. I have driven down Newburgh Road when the busses are running and some mornings it is hard to keep up with them! They drive way too fast.

This is what scares me about the bus ride. That is why I was curious about where your kid's bus traveled.
