PTA Merging Funds?; Stop It!

I just found out that the Adams' PTA wants to "merge/give" several thousand dollars of Adams' $ to the Roosevelt PTA, because they feel we are definitely moving to that school, and LI will definitely be in place.

In addition, not all of the children are going to Roosevelt, some are headed to Cooper/Emerson.

Our PTA is the one, which put in the $18,000 playscape in the Fall of 2005, which cannot be moved. Too bad the BOE did not send out a moratorium on large purchases, when they knew the plan was to close 7 schools.

I believe some principals "warned" their PTAs about waiting to make large purchases.

Get involved and advise your PTA to not "give" those thousands to anyone until later.

Why not just wait? Besides, those thousands are the parents' donated money. It should not be handled unwisely. PTAs handle a lot of money. Find out where your donations are going.

This is simply not true. There will be no PTA money merging at this time. Anything that is not spent on the kids by the end of the year can possibly be divided amongst all the schools that the children will be going to.

At the last Adams PTA meeting the proposed budget was put in place. They were going to allocate $400.00 to Cooper to start up the PTA and at least $650.00 to Roosevelt. The bottom of the budget stated and I quote "Any left over money will go to Roosevelt. A few of the parents at the meeting had issue with this because we felt that there were not giving enough money to the classes for end of the year parties. It was then voted on to give the classrooms more money for their parties. As it stands I do believe that because of giving more money to each classroom, the PTA at Adams will now wait until the end of the year to make a decision as to how much money they will have left, and how they are going to distribute the money.

We have just begun to fight!
whooohoooo! I can see this is going to be a hot topic, and very diverse depending on what strings you read that have related subjects and matter contained within.

I can also see that each PTA seems to be taking different courses of action - is there any coordination going on?

From what I understand the 650.00 that would go to Roosevelt would be for bills that did not get paid by the end of the school year and will need to be paid in the beginning of next school year.

there should be, Livonia PTSA Council gave us pretty specific guidelines. They are simply guidelines though, and not mandates. Our PTA board has not even discussed it yet, however we plan on discussing it with the PTA board we will be merging in the near future. Council suggested that money be allocated from all PTA's (closing or not) to the 5/6 school. They suggested that money be allocated for start-up at the receiving K-4 school. The amount truly depends on how much each PTA has and how much their members are willing to spend. The PTA money should follow wherever the kids go.

Aside from making sure there is budgeted money to follow the 5/6 grade and a little to help start up at the new school, there have been no suggesions as to the rest. It is true though, that if at the end of the year a closing PTA has more money than anticipated they should gift it to the recieving PTA. This way the money will follow the kids who raised it. However, this shouldn't be taking place until after the end of the PTA fiscal year, which for most is June 30.

An interesting side note, if a PTA disbands with any assets they are required to be turned over to the Michigan PTSA.

There were basic instructions given to PTA's last week at a transition meeting.

Since our school is closing (Adams) I do have strong feelings on this subject. I do not have a issue with our school giving away our remaining money to Roosevelt/Cooper/Emerson/Franklin at the end of the year. - BUT - I do believe that since our school raised that money for our children this year, that our children should benefit from it this year.

Agreed. The money should be spent on the children.

That is a very common sentiment. Technically as a non profit organization that is what should happen.

Some money does need to be set aside for next years "start up" though. Even if a fundraiser is started on the first day of school it is usually 1-2 months before you'll actually see any of that money.

I owe an apology regarding my post about Adams PTA. I was incorrect in my numbers, and I apologize. Leftover "token" monies to be merged w/new PTAs is fine w/me.

But, PTAs with strong ties to administration and the LI are making decisions for the entire school PTA community, and some of those decisions seem to be tied into leanings along the lines of the administration. PTAs, like any group, are "political" at some level.
