I would like to write a little on my feelings about moving the Churchill Transition Program to Franklin.
Alittle over 70 kids and there just isn't any room for them any more!! How Sad is that!! My daughter started her first year at Churchill. She has many friends from our neighborhood and friends in the center program as well. She has been in school for many years with these kids. This is unusual for special needs kids, I was told, by the head honcho of special ed. He said rarely do special needs kids go to school with the neighborhood kids. This was true early on in my daughters education, but now it is a whole new world since middle school and high school. She enjoys seeing her friends from the neighborhood every day and they enjoy her. It has been great. Now, unlike the regular ed, she will not get to stay at the high school she is currently attending, even though that was the deal with this legacy all along. I was happy in the begining of this whole legacy thing that I didnt have to worry about her and that I could consintrate on my son, the 5/6 disaster! I feel no respect was given to these kids and sure have been treated differently than the rest. There is much more to say and more venting to do , but I will wait to see if there is any one out there to do battle with!!!Just kidding!? ;)

JoJO,

I have not heard much on the Special Ed program despite the fact that I have spoken to many people. No seems to know what programs will be where, etc, under the LI. Can you clarify some of this for me?

What is going on is that Churchill has 2 special ed programs. CTP(Churchill transition program) and Center based program. The CTP program is for Livonia kids and kids out of area that decided to opt for the great program. The center based is for Livonia only. Those kids can stay but the 72 in the ctp program is going to Franklin. I chose the ctp program because it is a mix of life skills and academics, which is what my daughter needs. The center based is pretty much all academics. They say there is more room at Franklin. There will be alot of money involved with this move. Although funding is different for special ed it is just not the best thing. We voiced our opinions at meetings but it fell on deaf ears much like the boe meetings. They lied (special ed directors) and said that we could have another meeting before they decided what they would do. The next thing we knew it was a done deal. We were shown 2 rooms at Franklin that they would have next year. They said a new bathroom would be built to accommodate the needs of some kids. I dont trust them either when they promise things will be in place for next year. In 11th and 12th grade, they insist on a satellite program for them. They are currently doing it now. The satellite program is this: For 1/2 of the day (they are doing this now) a bus picks the kids up and takes them to Franklin. This is supposed to be community based instruction. We want this stopped before our kids get to that point. Not many like it now. They refuse to stop this ass nine program. My daughter is on the bus for long enough and there is no need for this. Just think of the money that could be saved...bus, driver, gas..........We dont want it!! Save the Money that we so desperately need!!
They did not care at all when I have written, emailed etc. about the fact that these kids are being discriminated against! That is my opinion anyway. I dont know if this helped at all. Its so hard to write the whole situation down. Hopefully when all of this is over, we can all get together and meet to tell our stories.
My daughter does not want to leave her friends, both in special ed and regular ed. She does know what is going on and does not like it. She wakes up with a smile every morning and cant wait to go to school. I am worried about her for next year though.
Thanks for listening! Keep up the great work! We appreciate all you are doing. Matt and I will give it our all here in the Garfield area to get this school board out of here!!!

I forgot to mention that I asked my sons principal about different things that I was hearing in the beginning that the program might move. He was on the demographics committee and thought he could answer some questions for me. He had no clue and directed me elsewhere. I also called Lynda Scheel and talked to her and she said she has much faith in the special ed directors to make the decision. 2 men decided what was best.

I have a niece in center program-AI at Riley now. We heard she will be attending Franklin as well. (Before we heard Churchill). Today I heard they are moving the TMI program over to Franklin as well. They plan to displace other program such as ROTC over to McKinley now. Boy are those McKInley people going to be PO'd as well. Now the school in their backyard is closing to them, but not to other programs.
This plan sucks!
