How was your open house for incoming 6th graders?

Very crowded even though they split the kids/parents into two groups. Parking lot
and gym were overcrowded.

Does everyone realize that, at the middle school level, P.E. is only required for 10 out of 40 weeks? Computers are only required for 10 out of 40 weeks? I was really surprised. "World Languages" is offered as an elective, but they do not offer a "real" language in the 7th grade. You can choose to add an extra P.E. class or a computer based "exploration" class(as an elective), but it is not required.

Does anyone know if P.E. and Computers were always this limited or is this a direct effect of the LI? Either way it is unacceptable.

In 8th grade the kids can choose between Spanish or French. If they get a C or better, they can then take Spanish 2 or French 2 in High School. Most colleges require (or recommend) two years of language and supposedly, once they finish 9th grade they would have met that requirement. My child still plans on taking language in 10th grade and beyond.

I was also at open house at Holmes. Yes, it was crowded, but there were still plenty of chairs open even though people were standing. The parking lot is always crowded on "all school" events even now.

Unless you are moving to France or Canada, I would STRONGLY recommend Spanish for kids these days. Learning Spanish can really open opportunities for you in the work place.

They should offer a language in the 7th grade.

And BTW, that was only half of the school population and their parents. Yes, it was crowded. I agree.

I realize that each session was only half of the population. The school will be very crowded next year. That is one of the main reasons I don't like the legacy initiative. Bussing isn't an issue for us since our children do not get the bus anyway.

The limited nature of the PE and Computers is not a direct affect of the LI. My current 8th grader only had 10 weeks of gym and 10 weeks of computers last year.

I took French in school, many, many moons ago. I think the schools need to keep up with the times. I say keep the Spanish, but add Japanese or Chinese instead of French.

At Stevenson they offer German and Japanese. Why not offer these in Holmes so they can learn them at an earlier age!

With all the Japanese and German companies moving here...that would be great.
Also with the whole schpeal about how children do better when they learn things sooner........I mean the earlier the better.....then why not have these in elementary? Or at least offer the same language classes in Middle school that they do in high school.

I noticed that they are not to quick on passing out the info sometimes! My son wanted to do this really neat program over the summer at Schoolcraft...and got the letter on a Wednesday to turn in on the Friday! And he needed 2 letters of recommendation and a 300 word essay!

Wonder how it will be next year with a ton of more kids????

Again....email would be helpful! Is you daughter just coming to Holmes?

My son is there now....and have a daughter going next year! She already had to turn her schedule in!
