Jim's post above pretty much covers it, but I would like to add to it. Basically, if you have time to help, we can use it. You will only spend the amount of time you feel comfortable with, no pressure. If everyone helps out, great things will be accomplished. We all have friends, family, neighbors, etc. We need to mobilize our community to help save it! Who wants their property value to decrease significantly? This will happen if the LI is implemented next fall! Please ask your contacts to help out. |

We definetly need to get that fact sheet out, to all of our neighbors. And it would seem advantagous to get it out before the recall. That way they are informed before we go out knocking on doors. |

Are you referring to the fact sheet from the St. Mary's meeting? We are working on a brochure that contains that information. Did you think it was helpful? Anything else you can think to add? We are open to suggestions. |

I think a fact sheet would be a great idea. I still think we are not getting our message across to the people who don't have kids. My brother-in-law lives in Livonia and has a senior at Stevenson. When we talk about the LI and why we're against it, he listens but we can tell he's thinking that this is a problem for us because we have elementary-aged kids, and not for him because he has a high-school senior. Parents with school-aged kids get; seniors, empty-nesters, etc. might not see the ripple affect this will cause.................mention decline in property values or the inability to sell their home and we'll get more people on board. |

I thought the fact sheet from St. Mary's was very well put, short, and to the point. We have got to get this information to the people in the community w/out school age kids. Will the brochures be for passing out to the neighborhood?? |

Some who have K-2 children in elementary schools that are not closing still feel they are unaffected by the LI. I do not think they have given the LI further thought or have researched it like others. I say these people need to be reached too. I am not saying all of them, but there many out there. I think once the negativities of the LI are handed to them, they may think differently. |

I have spoken to several people who think this is a necessary decision (because it saves the most money and because the higher ups tell them so). I have heard that 5th and 6th graders are a lot older than they used to be. People do not understand that this may have a negative impact on their children or their property values. We need to get the word out. Most of all people like to follow what everyone else thinks,,,if we are to change their minds, we need to inform them,,,and let every livonia citizen understand that they are indeed a stakeholder and will be affected by the LI. knowledge is power |

LEGACY INITIATIVE FACTS 1. 7 elementary schools will permanently be closed. 2. The closing of these schools may lead to a drop in property values. 3. Student enrollment has INCREASED by 1,172 students in the past 10 years. In 1994/95 the enrollment was 17,055. In 2004/05 it was 18,227. 4. An additional 3,700 children will be bussed next year. 5. LPS will need to purchase/lease several new busses leading to increased costs to the transportation department. (Fuel, employees, maintenance, repairs, etc.) 6. 700 children lining up after school to board busses. Yet to be determined how this will be coordinated. 7. 5/6 schools will have over 900 students, becoming the largest in Michigan. 8. There may be up to 20 classes/450 kids in each grade at these large 5/6 schools. 9. The 5/6 schools will be: Cooper, Johnson, and Riley. 10. Elementary schools remaining open having K-4, will have up to 560 students, approaching building capacity. 11. Possible need for “portables,” not yet determined. 12. There will be a DECREASE of 95 min./week of exercise between recess and PE. 13. Foreign language will be one semester and an introduction to four languages. 14. Overall, there will be a 5 min. loss of “Specials” (Music, Art, PE, LMC). 15. If one child in a family is in K-4 and a sibling is in a 5-6 school, there will be up to a 6-mile drive between the two schools. (e.g. Kennedy to Johnson) 16. Loss of 5th/6th grade safety patrols and 6th grader reading buddies for younger students 17. Research indicates: a. Broader grade spans (K-6 or K-8) have produced the highest academic achievement levels. b. Each transition to a new school causes a decrease of academic achievement, loss of self-esteem, identity, and sense of security. There may also be a decrease in extra-curricular involvement due to the lack of “fitting in” at the new school. c. Smaller schools (200-400 students) outperform larger schools academically and socially. There is also a much greater sense of “community,” making children feel safer and more secure. They are also more cost efficient. 18. Plymouth-Canton Schools are now the 5th largest district in Michigan. Although we are the 6th largest districts, we employ approx. 600 more people than Plymouth-Canton Schools. 19. School districts around the country and right here in Michigan are in favor of privatizing non-instructional functions such as custodial, food service, and data processing/management services. In some cases, districts have seen millions of dollars in savings anually by outsourcing. 20. Private schools in the local area have reported an unprecedented number of enrollment inquiries in the past months. If 185 students leave LPS, there will be NO savings, defeating the primary purpose of this plan. To learn MUCH MORE, visit: citizensforlivoniasfuture.com |

I liked that fact sheet and thought handing those out before/during petition gathering would be a great idea. Its a great summary of the LI. |

I think it would be a good idea to have some sort of button to wear while collecting signatures for the petitions. That way, when people are approached, they'll have a clue as to what they're about to be solicited for. Most people don't want to answer their doors if there is someone out there trying to sell stuff. |

" The closing of these schools may lead to a drop in property values" I think you should consider taking this off your list of "FACTS". This is perhaps a fear, or a popular scare tactic, but you can not PREDICT a fact. Schools have closed for decades in Livonia, and property values have continued to rise. Decline in the current market has much more to do with the state economy, so you can not attribute property value decline, say this spring to the LI. |
