A friend received this email earlier. Can anyone verify this? FYI- I was told that that the LMC class in the upper elelmentary will not be as it is currently formatted. Teachers will schedule time to take their class to the LMC once every three weeks. This is disturbing, because in 5th and 6th grade the students are taught internet safety, and how to use the internet for research which prepares them to write research and essay papers. Plus, children need to be encouraged to become avid readers, and without weekly visits to the school library I suspect the literacy rate may go down. |

Considering that the kids currently go once a week to LMC and the librarian will now have to get 3 times that many classes there for their "special," this sounds just about right. Otherwise, they would have to do 3 classrooms at a time. I would guess they might not have the space in the LMC to accommodate that many at one time. This rumor makes sense...and it stinks! |

Well, if the average enrollment is around 325/elementary, with one librarian, once a week. I guess the calculations would be correct. There will be triple the kids, so the LMC time gets cut by 1/3. Unbelievable! |

If your kid needs a book for a school project, I'm sure you could call up one of those friendly Board members. Since they voted on a plan to reduce LMC time, I'm sure they won't mind helping out. Of course, the city of Livonia libraries have reduced operating hours---so make sure you check that out before you set up a time to visit. Unbelievable!! Makes me mad!! |

I volunteering for years at our LMC and find that news extremely disturbing. I'll check and see if I can find out if there's any truth to this rumor. The Media Specialist in an elementary sees each class once per week - approximately 14 sessions per week. It would be tough to fit in 25-30 class sessions per week for one person in a 5/6 building w/ over 700 kids. See - something else being taken away! |

It is quite clear that the BOE and the LI Plan did not disclose everything that will be taken away from the children, Safety Patrols, School Buddies, Recess time, LMC time, etc... but they sure made a point of making sure everyone knew they were adding "specials" ( that have no gaurantee to remain for even an entire school year ). It would have been nice to have them provide full dislosure of all things being eliminated right beside all of those that are being promised. It is filet mignon when you have it, and is a carrot on a stick when you don't. |

I wonder how much LMC time they get in Plymouth-Canton? They have ~30% fewer employees in that category. Livonia Public Schools = 56 ---------------------- Librarians/Media Specialists: 31.0 Library/Media Support: 25.0 Canton = 39 ------ Librarians/Media Specialists: 18.0 Library/Media Support: 21.0 |

Good question, maybe someone could call them directly and get the answer? I wouldn't be suprised if they have more time, but they do it more efficiently. |

I have a sneaking suspicion that they will play this one ( and many others ) off on the transition teams |

I just put in a call to Mrs. Alles. She will be in a meeting until 4:00. The secretary said she would give her the message if she comes out of the meeting for a break but wasn't sure she would get back to me today. The secretary who took my question started to give me the "nothing is final yet" speech. So we'll see what Mrs. Alles has to say. Grant1, I have the same suspicions about the transition teams, that they will be the ones to break a lot of this news. |
