Mr. Finley says that "Doug Ross, head of the University Prep Academy charter school, has a formula that can work for all students, but not if they are warehoused in big, factory schools."

"Big, factory schools" = 5/6 schools.

No Super sized schools wanted for our little ones in LPS! Didn't McDonalds scrap the Super Sized stuff a year or so ago? If they can, we can too!

Response from TAB under Questions for TAB

As far as I'm concerned the Bryant property is one of the most valuable...while it could certainly bring in needed revenue in single family housing with the hope of additional students into the district. I believe that this is the single most centrally located piece of real estate large enough to accomodate even a new High School.......I'm just thinking off the cuff here but what if declining enrollments continues for the next 10-20 years.......Could this not be used for a New "SUPER high school and the others closed?  Wild idea...just a thought but even maybe 1 large 7-8 school.

I've not read anything else from TAB indicating that he is not a proponent of super schools. I realize that he was the lone nay vote on the LI, but this is a position that should be clarified. At that board meeting, he indicated that his nay vote was due to public outcry, and not due to 5/6 being a bad proposal. Does he still feel that way?

I agree this should be clarified. As far as TAB's quote goes.......Bryant may be useful in years to come, but we do need to do something now. In 7-10 years my child will be just about out of school. We can't save something because we think it will be useful down the road. If we do close a bunch of schools, selling off some of the property will be a must. That Bryant location is such a prime location and would be great for homes...but the homes need to be priced where people could afford them now.

Tab had no way of stopping the runaway train. He knew that when he cast his vote. At the meeting that night, the BOE knew it was being voted in.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate Tab's "No" vote, but I think he knew it wouldn't make a difference. Why did he vote "No"? I guess that's a question only he can answer. Based on prior commentary made, I'm not quite sure. He said he thinks it's a good plan, but he's afraid of losing LPS students. Not sure what he meant
about the "super high" or "super middle" school. He should know that the community is against a "super" anything. In my opinion, that is why the majority
are opposed to the mega 5-6 plan.

Tom, maybe you could clarify?

Where exactly is the Bryant property located? I would hate the idea of a "super school"! Gosh...something else to worry about in the future?

Bryant property is on the east side of Merriman between 6 and 7 Mile. Just south of St Marys Church where we all meet to fight the Legacy Proposal. The school was demolished several years ago so it would be more attractive for potential buyers. Thats what I heard at the time anyways. I wonder how much the demolition cost? Anyone know? Did LPS pay for that?

I heard that LPS was going to lease some of the property to the church for additonal parking, but I do not think the lease was supposed to generate very much income. I think the lease is for quite a few years. Any comments on this one?

The lease is for fifty years. I'll probably be dead when it's up.

Do you think they could break it? Would that be why they are holding off the sale or are they just leasing because they think they may use it for a "mega" school in the next 7-10 years?

Who know what they are thinking? Maybe the portion that they are allowing them to use would not matter. Fifty years does seem like extremely long time to lease
though.

Seems odd doesn't it? Maybe an excuse not to get rid of the property?

wow....fifty years on a lease? Doesn't make that much sense to me?! Did the Church even build the parking lot? Wonder how much the lease was for.

Fifty years on the lease....hmmmmm. I just thought it was interesting that TAB even brought up the subject. Does anyone else even think was interesting?

One of my boys plays soccer there and our coach heard they were trying to make it a nice soccer place like Bicentennial. That's only what he HEARD. I've nothing to back that up.
