I am a REALTOR...I am currently taking a break however for the Holidays and slow market....
My personal opinion is this...home values are inflated in alot of communities. Michigan is not a great place for real estate right now...unfortunatly. As far as Novi...people are taking big hits on their homes right now. That is why I did not buy there....too over inflated!
The LI..I think will hurt some subs and not affect others. Im sorry to say that. When looking for a home in a city that you want...and you have school children..you typically look for a sub that is very close to schools. Alot of REALTORS also provide school info to buyers looking in that area...or at least direct that buyer to a website where they can find that info. When LPS goes to the K-4 config...it will hurt some subdivisions and not affect others in the same way. Unforunatly...I live in a sub where the elem school is closing...and my daughter will be bussed quite a way to the 5/6 school.
Think about this...if you are an outsider...looking to move, and schools are important to you, then you have a big decision to make here. Novi homes are smaller...more expensive, have the same config for the schools and better scores......however it is better planned out than LPS...same campus...closer proximity to schools.....etc. Northville is the acception that has the k-6 model and some of Novi does go to Northville Schools. The homes can be quite pricey there as well.
Our neighboring communities..such as Farmington and Plymouth/Canton, have great scores..have compariable homes prices and sizes and and have the K-6 model. So if they do not like the k-4 model...then these cities are a great choice..and I think we will lose some potential buyers from Livonia.
Not everyone has kids...some people will be happy or will not mind the config..if Livonia is a great upgrade in schools for them.
Personally....I just moved here....I cannot sell my home, I do not have the equity to do so. I am scared to see if alot of parents move their children from the district...what affect will that have on the school system. But unfortunatly...i feel the BOE did not really take a deep look into that.
Is there any way you can mobilize the Realtor block to determine the cause and effects on each individual market area that will be affected by the school closings?
The thought here is that if we have supporting data to go to non-child / non-school age children home owners and show them that thier home values may drop due to the LI we can gain thier support ( and signatures ) for a recall petition drive.
I know of many retirees and original residents in my neighborhood ( and most certainly many other neighborhoods ) who don't have a clue what is going on, and have no idea of the impact this may have on thier home values if they live in a highly affected area.
Please help if you can.

Reaching some older singles has been a bit of a challenge in my neighborhood, too.
Lots of older folks won't open their door, if they do not know you. Understandable.
But many are involved and read the newspapers. They really care about their properties. Hitting people and government in the pocket book is usually the fastest way to get folks mobilized and off the "apathy club."
We will do this.

Thanks for the comment.
I guess I'm not sure what you mean?
Did someone offend--a senior? I hope not. Please fill me in.

I love Livonia so much, I think about its future.
I see a beautiful cooperation of neighborhoods, much as we have now, with unique offerings--and all w/ a heart--the k-6-8 school.
Our kids are our hearts. We need them close by.

That put tears in my eyes. It is the people that make a community what it is....when are all of you going to understand that?
Moveon-
Apparently you don't have significant ties to Livonia as some of us do. I, too, love Livonia. Lived here ALL of my 44 years. Hoover, Holmes, Stevenson. Those were my schools. It was a great ride. Which is why my husband and I bought our first house in Livonia in 1988 right before we got married. Then moved to another house in Livonia in '93. In fact, my parents STILL live in Livonia in the house they built in '62.
You say it is the people that make a community what it is...........well, I'll tell you I wouldn't know half of the wonderful people I know in this community if it had not been for my kid's being in school. How am I supposed to meet and get to know 900 sets of parents? That is the projected number of students that will be going to Johnson. How will I even get to know the students for that matter??? My son will be there for 1 whole year before he is transitioned to yet another school.
So, I hope THAT puts another tear in your eye, because it REALLY upsets me.
P.S. Maybe if you'd cut some of the sarcasm, people would be more willing to debate with you as opposed to fighting with you

You are right. I grew up in Livonia too. This is our second house here. My dad is just about to sell his Livonia home....been there 30 years. My child is a lower el student. Just getting to know the parents here and my child is making great friends. I have no idea what is going to happen next year. It makes me so sad.
