As to the question of waiting lists for private schools...many parochial schools have open houses at the end of January, so you may not enroll until after that time. It's not always a matter of waiting lists, but that private schools always take returning students and their siblings prior to accepting new students. It's not as simple as enrolling today for next fall. Also, as we like our community and our neighbors we plan on staying in Livonia while sending our children to private school. For now anyway! |

Maybe you can split the cost of therapy with this person. As for the REAL topic, I'm looking into the Walled Lake or Huron Valley districts at this time for my 2 kids. We may be stuck here though, depending on how much of a hit we may take on our house price...that's my next bit of research. |

Most of the private schools have 1 week of open enrollment in February or March. You cannot just sign up anytime you want. Most of us are planning for next year. Some have chosen to move their kids now. I personally feel it is more disruptive to move them in the middle of the year, but you are more likely to be guarenteed a spot if you transfer now. |

"Tee Hee"? My daughter will be attending Tutor Time for kindergarden. We are already signed up, and nothing will change that now. |

We will be also pulling out our youngest from LPS. I am afraid...the BOE is getting much more than they have bargained for. Im not sure their "savings" will actually work in their favor. Personally, I didnt think that the savings they pitched would have been achieved anyway....they never fully informed us of what the costs would be for the one time spending and etc. Just wondering if they really thought that parents would be this upset?

We will be moving to a different city so they can minus our 2 children. The BOE is absolutely ruining the city of Livonia1 |

Don't move to Farmington Hills. We have a k-5 configuration and your child will be attending junior high at the tender age of 11. To me a 5/6 configuration sounds good my child at least would be in an elementary setting for a longer period of time. |

I went to a K-5, then junior high(6-8) then high school 9-12, and I turned out just fine, wow even went to college. I think K-6 is preferable but the 5-6 with close to 1,000 is unacceptable. |

In the district we moved from...had k-5, 6-8,9-12. Worked out fine. In the middle School...each grade had their own halls....none of the kids were mixed together inbetween classes and at lunch. Worked out great. I think 6th grade in Middle school is okay..if handled correctly. |

JEM...first of all my daughter's school is closing...she's moving anyway, hence this transition can not be stopped now that LI has passed....But by moving to private school we will eliminate 2 future transitions...the move to 5-6 and the move to middle school....several kids in the neighborhood already attend the private school we are looking into...I moved once when I was a child, went to college and turned out just fine too, but of course my parents selected a school they saw as better as the one we left. As a parent, I will do what I think is best for my child. No amount of opinion from anyone is going to change how I feel. I work at a University, all my decisions are based on reputable research. We moved another child in the middle of his cancer treatment from one hospital to another to improve his care. The only thing I regret now is not moving him sooner. |

Transitions are inevitable..........however, the amount of transitiionings children have to make can be minimal. 1) If I decide to go private, my children will have 2 transitions....just like they would have in our current configuration, 2) Their next school will not have 900 plus students, 3) They will not be on a bus for 1.5-2 hours per day, 4) Asking my 9 year old what he wants to do and leaving decisions up to him in regards to his education is a bit absurd. It's up to the parents to make decisions of this magnitude for their children. If a K-5 model had been adopted, the amount of transitionings would remain the same. Unfortunately for some who's schools are closing...they have an additional transition. Many districts do have that configuration, most likely because the model provides a foundation for academic achievement and is more economical. The main reason I moved to Livonia is because of the K-6 school configuration, I like the idea of 6th graders in the elementary for the additional year. Kids grow up so fast these days. Transitioning into a large school with a group of 775 new students is overwhelming. Dynamics change, peer pressure will increase and student achievement will be lost. Seventh graders are more mature than a fifth grader and it still is an adjustment for seventh grade. Financially, adding another 30-50 busses to the district cannot be cost effective. Diesel fuel alone is costly and wait till the hurricanes hit the Gulf again next year and the year after...........diesel fuel will go through the roof. Do you know that the cost of fuel is what has put Owner Opertaors (truck drivers who own their own trucks) out of business? A truck of that size gets 5-8 miles per gallon. I have never owned a bus but would assume that it falls under the same catagory. |

Well, this is not some amazing new information JEM. If I decide to go west and north as I'm trying, my children will have the same number of transitions as if I stay. The difference will be it will be on my terms, not yours. The City of Livonia has been struggling with financial issues for years now which have reduced many services including Police and Fire protection. The LI only adds to this problem by making it less desirable to stay or to move here. Many people in my neighborhood have contemplated moving for years, but have stayed for the schools. Many know, as I do, that my housing dollar will go much farther by relocating farther west/north. Unfortunately, the BOE has eliminated that one thing many have clung to. I'm glad you went to college turned out fine (by your definition). Did the BOE ask their LPS parent(s) what they want to do? Did they listen when they heard it anyway? Hmmm...... |

Oh yes I forgot, If we had went with the K-5 plan or stayed with the K-6 plan(which, by the way were not even proposed), I would not even be posting here. Just an FYI for "Dr." Randy and the BOE. |
