Sorry about the delay. I sometimes miss some posts. In MACAT there are sixty spots for each grade (seventh and eighth). In ACAT, there were around 50-60 spots for each grade except kindergarten through second grade. However, I think they did some variety of restructuring due to declining enrollment, so my numbers for ACAT may be off. In MSC there are 30 spots for each grade. I have no clue about the number of students in CAPA. My guess is that there are 90 spots for each grade, but it might be only 30 spots. Obviously this is not a majority of the LPS poplulation. However, offering such opportunities to those with special needs, such as those who are academically talented and those who are mentally impaired, is one of the things which only a large district with sufficient enrollment can accomplish. Creating charter schools risks the ability of the district to accomidate everyone. |

C3hull, you sound threatened... don't worry, I don't bite, and I never questioned your math skills. Give me a couple moments to get some more data and get you a percentage. I'll update this post. Updated: I used the "population projection" from the November 14 presentation. However, I did notice one thing I think is an error. The Webster ACAT population is 242. I think that is too high. The number probably includes the TMI program. I decided to divide the population in half, one half being TMI and the other ACAT. Providing my numbers are correct, ACAT, MACAT, MSC, and CAPA have enough slots to account for 1.8% of the LPS population. If you include TMI, then the number grows to 2.5%. I revise these numbers later. |

Choosing acat macat msc or capa still boils down to the fact Enrollment in any of those programs is a CHOICE! Parents were well aware of the bus rides that would accompany enrollment in any of the above mentioned programs and opted for them knowing the length of bus rides. the 5/6 schools are NOT a CHOICE, the bus rides to the schools are NOT a CHOICE Charter schools are a choice! |

I apologize XYZ-321 for posting inaccurate data, I was off by a year. Mea Culpa. I should have gone back to look at what I read over the past 2 months and confirmed. I just remembered that I was concerned for my child after reading it because she would be the age they were referring to. I suppose if I had attended Livonia Public Schools instead of Farmington Public Schools this kind of obvious ignorance could have been avoided.

I seriously doubt most parents even gave the issue of long bus rides consideration when they sent their students to these schools. The educational value of these schools is worth to many parents more than anything you may consider a disadvantage. Now consider charter schools. The majority of people here seem to think there will be enough students to create charter schools. My guess is that there will not be enough students to open many charter schools and your students will end up going a long distance to get to the one, two, or three charter schools that are created. That doesn't solve the problem of distance. Also this article from the New York Times suggests that charter schools may not be in the best educational intrests of your children. |

60 x 2= 120 3rd - 12th? 60 x 10 = 600 K-12? 13 x 30 = 390 13 x 90 = 1170 120+600+390+1170 = 2280/18,000 = 1.26% of the student population. It's awesome that LPS has programs for these students! However; it still boils down to the majority of the LPS parents surveyed (65%) did NOT want any change in the grade configuration. It sure in funny how advocates of the bussing system all seem to be members of the MACAT, ACAT, CAPA & MSC Programs. I forgot....you're not old enough to vote! Sorry, that was an unnecessary remark. By golly, the boy has got me again!

"I fear that we have awakened a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible resolve" Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto Empire of Japan December 7th, 1941 I think this is what has happened with us LPS parents. ( Sorry, Crafty has put me on a quote tangent!) |

Cindi, I'm sorry that your knowledge of the special programs in LPS is lacking. You knew less than I thought you did. MSC and CAPA are only for high school students. ACAT is only K-6. MACAT is only for 7-8. I also would like to take back my results. I made a slight mistake. My guess is 4.2% without TMI and 4.9% with TMI. Also, 2280/18,000 = 12.67%, not 1.26%. Redo your math. |

I am reminded also of the words of Thornton Wilder: “I know that every good and excellent thing in the world stands moment by moment on the razor-edge of danger and must be fought” |

xyz-321, can you provide your calculations so that we can all have to numbers straight once and for all. I've heard different #'s for the past few months and if you can post them in detail, we can all agree on the final #'s. Thanks! |

I'm sorry if the assumption was incorrect. I was merely saying how your wording sounded and adding some humor on top of it with the "don't worry, I don't bite." Let me explain my logic. When you said "before you make a smart remark about my math skills" you exhibited concern over me questioning your math skills. It seems to me, you felt your pride was threatened by my remarks. I simply pointed out my observations. |
