The bottom line is...we have had lawn signs, we have written hundreds of letters, we have spoke out at all the meetings. The plan was already in place, it did not matter what we said, what we researched, how we feel. The deal was done in October when it was presented to all the schools. They were being "politically correct" by holding the hearings and letting the public have their say. Rumor has it that some of the Board members quit reading the mail long time ago. Too many "yes men/women" on the BOE. I think it took great courage for Tom Bailey to speak out against the proposal. I wonder if he gets the cold shoulder from the rest of them?!

Well, the signs surely won't be noticed by the BOE! But the signs may be a good idea to make more people aware the recall is coming soon. Hopefully, it will keep the community chatting about what's going on. It will surely have people who are not aware , asking questions! Remember, any publicity is good publicity! How about some T-shirts, bumper stickers, buttons, baseball hats, etc. Anyone with a good idea or contact, email:

All ideas are welcome!!!

DetNews just got wind of the many folks contesting their taxes, because they feel the LI will reduce their property values.

I am doing this myself.

This issue hits the city in the pocket book. I know the recall will have momentum, as it becomes known that this iniative is not saving $$, but losing $$.

Two good friends have decided to move, because of LI. They were swaying, but LI pushed them over the edge.

That's $8,280 x 4 kids. Hmmmm.

I hope it will be written about. It is interesting how this LI is affecting so many areas of our economy.

How does one go about contesting their taxes? How do I know by how much they (my taxes) are too high?

You know that your taxes are too high if your SEV is more than half of the fair market value of your house. The market value would be determined by looking at recent sales of similar homes in your area, which are a matter of public record.

We are all concerned about whether the Legacy Initiative will hurt property values, but until/unless we see an actual decline in home sales prices in our neighborhoods, there isn't much sense in filing an appeal. The assessor is not going to reduce taxes based on speculation or prediction...you have to provide evidence that your home's actual market value is less than the assessed value.

When I lived in Redford, I appealed my property taxes. My place was actually assessed for more than what I actually paid for it. The local assessor would not agree to change and I had to go to the state tax tribunal. I ultimately won and got all of my overpayment refunded, but it took well over a year.

What about putting the petitions online, and letting people sign them and mail the, in?

Not my idea originally, but I like it.

I also too moved here from Redford this year. I heard that the time to contest your taxes was in March? Has anyone heard that? I was told that by the assessors office...when I moved..apparently our SEV is higher than half of what we paid for the house...if you can believe that??

Also I think that is a great idea about the petitions....can we do that?

My understanding........Petitions are not legal on line. In fact some signatures can be discredited if the signature and printed name are not on the correct line. They are very picky.

Tax Bill:

My taxes are due in Feb. So, not sure about appeals in March.

Research indicates a 10% drop, if you lose your neighborhood school.

Realtors are saying the market is even worse in Livonia because of LI.

My neighbor dropped her price $30,000 after LI came about--in order to sell.

Just conjecture.

We need some data from the Realtor industry. They do have an organized group who may have already collected viable data showing the impacts of school district reorgs, or other types of mass school closings and overcrowding. Anybody know anything from Garden city?, I hear since they closed one high school and pushed all students into the other there are up to 5 kids sharing a locker ( gee...did anyone mention this one?, besides the possibility of trailer classrooms there is not enough locker space to accomodate each child ). I am sure thier housing market took a hit on that move, and I personally know of a few GC kids who want to go to Livonia schools but can't since we do not allow anybody from outside the district.

It's funny--we allow kids from out of Livonia to be admitted into the tech center school.

Tom B. made a comment about it at last BOE meeting. He said it was a good thing to let other kids in.

TAB: Where are you?

Why is it okay for some programs, not for others? Hmmmm.

I think this question was misunderstood. Does anyone know if we can print a copy of the petition on-line? People could then sign them (with the old bic) and mail them to a designated address. Is this possible? It would allow for more signatures without hitting the pavement.
