Dear Mr. Bailey, Below is a e-mail that I sent to the demographic committee yesterday. I was wondering if you had any input on this idea. I know that Cooper was chosen as the 5-6 school of choice for south of Five Mile. I can tell you that all of us South of Five Mile are very unhappy with that school. Personally I do not have a problem with Westland. My mother lives there, and I lived there for 23 years and went to Livonia Public Schools also. What I do have a problem with, is I live within a mile of Riley. Why would I want to send my child 4.5 miles to a elementary school. When I moved into my house, I choose this house knowing that my children would go to Franklin, I was fine with that. I LOVE FRANKLIN. Also when my child (almost 19) went to Adams, there was talk of changing the boundaries then, so that these children would go to Emerson with their peers. I didn't and still don't have a problem with Emerson. What I have a problems with, is Cooper being right across the street from a hazardous waste site. Now I know, that you will say that this is not a issue. It is not a issue, it is a HUGE issue. IF I WANTED MY CHILDREN TO GO TO COOPER, I WOULD HAVE MOVED THERE. Being that I grow up right around there, I was there watching them with hazmet suits on cleaning up the site. Can I have it in writing that, the Cooper site is 100% safe. I know that you can not do that. I know that alot of people are just talking but, I SAW WHAT HAPPENED THERE. I DO NOT WANT MY CHILD THERE. I also know alot of people who live in the Taylor area, old Adams parent's and people on my children's sports teams. I can tell you that they are very upset about sending there children to Riley, when Dickinson is right down the street. I know that you proposed that it would take 1 million dollars to renovate Dickinson. DO YOU NOT BELIEVE THAT ARE CHILDREN ARE WORTH THAT. We do know that, this would make all of the people North of 5 Mile happy, and alot of people south of 5 Mile happy. Let's think about reopening Dickinson and then use that as a 5-6 upper elementary. Make Riley the 5-6 upper elementary for the South schools. Know I know that the people who live by Cooper will probably start screaming about having to be bussed like we are, however we really are making the most concessions in this situation. We get bussed to Emerson, about 2.5 miles, then to Franklin about 3.0 miles, so why not have them have to be a little inconvienced for 2 years. If you want all the people just North of Schoolcraft and South of Merriman could all start, driving to Stevenson and Churchill and see how far that bus ride is, and start making noise about us being rezoned for Churchill and Stevenson. This is my 2nd letter to this committee. I hope you guys really do listen to what is said. I haven't got a response from my first e-mail yet. Sincerely. Terry |

I was told by a school board member that Dickinson is not an option due to cost to update. They said it would be extensive since the school has not been used for years as a operational elementary school. |

We can't use a previously used school because it would cost too much to open it as an elementary school? So what happens if enrollment changes in the future? Say we need one of those (7) closed schools....would the same rule apply? Sounds like it only applys when it is convenient for LPS. |

That is complete BS.....it's going to take 600,000 to get Cooper ready, it would take 800,000 to get Dickinson ready....just another excuse by the BOE. |

When I inquired about Dickinson I was told the same thing..too expensive to get up to code for a school. But why would they want to keep a school in NW Livonia?? We don't count. Sorry, couldn't help myself.

We have just begun to fight!

There is not a shred of viable data that the BOE has produced to justify why they have chosen the facilites they have. Why are they spending 2.1 mil to upgrade a school to be more "energy efficient" but cannot justify retrofitting a school for current use in lieu of using a facility that is most questionable due to it's proximity to a toxic clean up site and one that still requires 100's of thousands of dollars to be utilized per the LI plan. The question many have asked regarding prime real estate land in NW Livonia is very valid since several known developers have made offers and would seriously like to get thier hands on that property. Ask yourself this...what would a prime piece of land in NW Livonia be worth to a developer who could put cluster or 300+ homes on it vs. a piece of land in Westland next to a known toxic site? |

To me it is transparent....the BOE appears to think we can't see it. It is shameful. I want them all removed! |

You are right, and may I repeat, you are right. Developers can't wait to get their hands on a substantial piece of land to build homes in Livonia, and the BOE knows that. |

What about moving the people in the Western Wayne Skill building over to the empty Nankin Mills building? It's only a couple of blocks away. Then they could use the WWS building instead of Cooper. |

Nah...still think they should use Dickenson....that way we have a centrally located 5/6. just my two cents.....but that would be an option better than Cooper. |

I am personally committed to seriously INVESTIGATING this health issue also. We went to Cooper for K-1. I had a HARD time selling my house in the COOPER district. Had to drop thousands, and sold to a single w/no plans for a family. If Cooper falls, LI FALLS. No more excuses BOE. Falling on deaf ears here. AK |

If you have the time to investigate, you WILL find many things. Some people will tell you "Oh yeah it is safe, I would have no problem sending my child their". Other environmentalists will tell you "Don't send your child their, there is just not enough information on the long term affects". I don't know about everyone else, but I DO WORRY ABOUT LONG TERM AFFECTS. Now God forbid my children will be happy and healthy all there lifes, but if for instance my youngest (who will attend Cooper) does get some form of cancer or liver diseases will I be forever second guessing my decision to send him to that school. |
