Dell + MapCreate

After numerous attempts to get MapCreate to work with no success I finally called the Lowrance folks. They told me that apparently MapCreate and Dell PC's don't really get along and not much they could do for me. Anyone else experience this and if so how did you resolve the problem? I'm new here so I'm not sure if this has been discussed previously, I never say any mention of it in the threads that I've read to date.

Fortunately I still had the old computer that the Dell replaced and MapCreate seems to work just fine on it. Kind of a pain switching back and forth but it gets the job done.

I use Mapcreate on my Dell E510.

Someone is full of crap. Call them again. Maybe you'll get a better tech a second time.

I've had problems with tech support like this before. I could tell you the story about the time I dealt with the person known now as "the idiot Radley" at McAfee support. But that would take to long to type out now...

If I can get the program to install then when I go to actually open it up, it won't and I get an error message.

Other times it quits part way through the install and I get a "cyclic redundancy" (something like that) error message.

Not a big deal as I'm pretty much up and going now. However a new question has popped up. Sometimes I get a little blinking icon of a MMC/SC card in the lower right hand portion of the screen on my GPSr, is this trouble?

That is normal. Think of it like the flashing light on the front of your computer for the hard drive activity. The blinking symbol is showing you that the unit is reading data off the memory card.

i think crc error is usually to do with memory (ram) but it could be to do with your hard drive or maybe your card as they should have crc checking in them as well.

One program that is great for checking ram chips is memtst86 i think...

i would download the "precompiled for floppy."

it is a zipped format that should contain a program that will make a floppy into a bootable disk.

when the program is done, just restart with your floppy in the drive.... it will probably boot from the disk and start the program

tell us how it goes

Good to hear. I was hoping that was the case. Thanks.

I just got a Dell XPS and can install MapCreate 6.3 fine, but when I go to run it, I get a runtime error - worked find on my previous non-Dell PC.

I'm working with Lowrance right now on a solution, but no luck yet. I'll let you know IF this problem ever gets solved.

I added map create 7.0 to my Dell Inspiron ( three years old) this week. Believe me it was not easy but you can do it.

My lessons learned, shut down completely your virus protection. Norton and especially zone alarm just don't like to be turned off.

Second log in as administrator thats important.

After 10 or so installs and removals and lots of help from a computer nred who also works at the store i bought Map cteate and has it on his computer we got it to install without any errors. I was getting a 399 error everytime I tried to install.

finally after an hour on the phone with the techs at Lowrance they also determined the blue MMC card was defective and are sending a new card.

I went and bought a regular MMC card like to ones in a camera and it loaded a map the first time.

This is real "buggy" software. Im afraid that having to insert the CD everytime I want to make a map i could at some point corrupt the Cd thus making the software useless.

Why don't they let you download it to my computer, I paid for the darn software.

What a strange program.

Having said that, the software is great once you get it to work, which is not easy.
