LEI rant (small one); Nauticpath

I purchased the Nauticpath coastal charts when I bought my Expedition. Love the detail on the charts! I also purchased a 1GB SD card to use with MapCreate. I had really hoped to put my coastal charts and the MapCreate files on the same SD card....in an effort to keep from having to change cards all the time. Well as most have probably figured out by now, it ain't possible. The Nauticpath charts are encrypted to the SD card they are sold on. You can copy the files off to anywhere else (to use as backups), but they are completely unreadable unless they are on the original card (which is only a few kilobytes larger than the actual charts). So you can save your trails and waypoints, but you can't put any other charts on it.

So I called up LEI. They were very nice, even if they didn't help. I had hoped to send them my Nauticpath card AND my 1GB Sandisk SD card and have LEI transfer and reencrypt (or whatever) the charts to my larger card. Seemed like a reasonable request. Hell, they could have even kept the original card! No dice. I asked them if there was any interface that I could use to import the charts into MapCreate; again, no can do. They correctly stated that even if I could have imported the charts, I couldn't have used them anywhere else because of the encryption.

So here I am, one coastal charts card and one Large card for my MapCreate maps. I really wish they would offer the charts on a larger card!

Does anyone have any experience with the Navionics charts? Can you move them to another card? Any help is very much appreciated.

I know how you feel, even if I don't use Nautical charts. The aviation database for the AirMap units are rigged to a card the same way. Back when I was flying a lot, I wanted a BIG area of mapping, in a plane you can cover a lot of ground. My aviation maps were on a 64MB card, and I have a 512 for big maps, but couldn't get both on the same card.

What they do now for the aviation charts is you can download them directly from Lowrance, onto the card you want. (But it is stuck on that card from then on out.) Something like that would probably work for the Nautical charts if they were to do it that way.

Man that's to bad, cause I am waiting for the Canadian nautical map to come out and it would be nice to get a 2GB card and have it on with my Topo. I realy don't want to have to change cards if possible.

I have a Navionics card and it specifically says only to be used in the GPS unit. So in order to get the lake info I want onto the GPSr I have to plug in that card then, I guess, when I need the Map info I plug in that card. Definitely a bit of a pain. I patiently await the "workaround". :D
