Canada Topo; Crossing in and out of covered areas.

I have the Canadian Topo. It just happens that it drops down to where I live here in Milwaukee, WI. It ends about 5 miles south of my house. I plan to make a map that includes Milwaukee and where I go in Canada. It will include an area that is not covered by the Topo. On my trip to Canada I will be crossing out of the covered area and then back in. Has anyone had any experience doing this. Will it cause a problem?

Mameigwess,
I did this same thing this summer near Ely, MN. The Canadian TOPO covers a fair portion of the US. I built my US maps up to just N of Ely, and then extended the CA Maps just S of Ely. There was a bit of overlap, and even the enhanced lake file for Moose Lake, and all displayed fine. I know that Lowrance tech support said do not have overlapping files, but this was not a factor for me.

I used the "unlocked" map technique, and the maps are all .at5's vice .lcm's, so I don't know if that is a factor.

Build a few, and try things out...let us know what happens.

Thanks for the reminder about the .at5's. Will try it. You posted that it can cause problems when both the Canadian and US Topo's are loaded on the same computer. Have you found a way around that? Also, are you saying that you made 2 maps, one from the US Topo and the other from the Canadian, and loaded them both on the same card?

BTW
I take highway 61 north every year to Canada. Have you ever been to Grand Marais? We always stop there at the Blue Waters Cafe for breakfast on the way up and the Birch Terrace for dinner on the way down. Been doing this since 1973.
First fish this year was a 41 inch Northern that my wife caught.

Mameigwess,
The tech said that if I had overlapping map area that the GPSr would not know which file to use, and then show nothing. I never saw this problem. Oh, yes, loaded them both on the same card.

Yes, I made a map w/ US and Canadian TOPO. They had a small overlap area, but no problems displaying. If you wnated to be safe, you could pick a latitude, and build each map with that as it top or bottom border.

This was my first time paddling across the border. Started on the southern end of Moose lake, up through Prarie Portage, and what seemed like 50 more portages :o through the various lakes in Canada.

The best we could catch was a 13" Smallmouth. Those little guys still tasted better than the freeze dried, though :D

Let me know if you have any more questions.

PS.
I make all my maps with the "unlocked" technique. Then I made small maps for all the areas I visit, and I can then load them on whatever SD card I'm using (either my Jeppesen Data card, or the plain old GPS data card) as I visit. So....not sure if that kept the overlapping data from conflicting or what.

Oh yea, that is why I did the unlocking in the first place. Wanted to have the Canadian and US maps on the same card, and didn't want to experiement with dual registering the card.

I assume you were in the Quiteco (sp?) Park area. Must be nice not to have to worry about us people in power boats running you over. It's good to have an area like that, I think there should be more.

Here's a question. How much room should I leave on a card for loading data? For example. If I were to create a detailed trail , let's say 6 or 7 thousand points, of a 700 mile trip and then wanted to load it onto the card along with the map, how much memory would I need free.

Mameigwess,
Yea, the boats were only in Basswood along the border, and only had to deal with a few 20 HP wakes :D

As for amount of memory needed, my map of the whole southern section of Quetico (way more than I could ever cover in a canoe) was 2 MB. My 30 mile wide, 1200 mile long route from Denver to Ely was 76MB.

I saved my trails daily (to prevent loss, and to have a daily segment), had several waypoints inserted for the portages, etc. The total of those 7 days were about 20kB each. The driving trip home with about 4000 points were only about 30kB.

All in all, it's less than 100MB for all this. Hope this gives you a reference.

P.S. Oops...now if you want to create a Route, I think they use a little more space...not sure. Here's an easy way to check. Go on a drive, and then save that trail. Under trails, "navigate the trail". it will create a new route to navigate. You can then save that route, and then compare files sizes of the trail and route. I'm sure AirMapper can add some wisdom here

I took a look at some usr files I have laying around, and checked their sizes.

I have a route, approximately 100 miles following roads, and it's 8KB. I also noticed full Pocket Query's, with 500 caches and long names, run 40-50KB

I guess for data files, keep out 1-2 MB of free space and that should hold all you need and still have plenty of breathing room.

Thanks guys for the info. Just wanted to make sure I didn't run into any problems. I can see there won't be as the local OfficeMax had a sale and yesterday I bought a couple of ScanDisk 512's, all they had left, for a total of $27.

As to the problem of having both the Canadian and US topo's on the same computer I'm going to look imto something called a "sandbox". I read about it but at the time didn't pay much attention. It's suppose to let you run a program on your computer and it's in it's own enviroment and the rest of the computer can't see it. That way I would run the Canadian Topo as normal and the US Topo in the "sandbox". Let you know what I find.
