The long rumored Xbox 360 Elite price cut officially happened this morning. The Elite dropped from $399 to $299, and the discontinued Pro unit will leak off of store shelves at a discounted $249 price point. The Arcade stands stoic and proud amidst the price drops, retaining its $199 asking price. Cheaper stuff is good, but what does it all mean? Industry analysts EEDAR have a few thoughts to share. The analyst organization with the funny name "believes the strategic decision was fueled by the PS3 price drop, which both Microsoft and the video game industry as a whole have been anticipating since early spring of 2009." No kidding? EEDAR warns that despite Microsoft's Elite console settling into a "$299 sweet spot," the company might be in a tougher place than you think. "Whilst the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are now equals at the $299 price point, technologically the Xbox 360 is not at the same level as its Sony competitor," EEDAR explains. "This puts the Xbox 360 in a tough position where it is outmatched in terms of hardware capabilities at $299 and the Wii remains alluring to casual and price sensitive consumers at $249. Over the next year Microsoft will most likely reposition the Xbox 360 Elite closer to the $249 price point to both pressure Sony and attract potential Wii consumers." Is the 360 doomed to remain the confused, attention-starved middle child forever? Perhaps, because EEDAR is also predicting a price drop from Nintendo sometime in the future. Ultimately, this would allow the Wii to tighten its grip on the casual/ frugal demographic that Sony and Microsoft are attempting to edge in on. The 360 has an uphill battle ahead. With the 360 and PS3 at the same asking price, its hard to deny the out-of-the-box advantages Sony's console has. Free online play, blu-ray capabilities, and a lower console failure rate are all positives the PS3 has going for it over the 360. Only time will tell if software is truly the influencing factor of the console wars. The tussle for supremacy will only get more intriguing as motion control frenzy begins. Go pop some popcorn, this is about to get good. link http://www.gameinformer.com/NR/exeres/8ad8a3bb-00d1-4b35-89ab-f51015f1dd72.htm |
