GDC 08: Puzzle Quest: Galactrix in Development Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords was a surprise hit on DS and PSP (and later numerous other platforms) that combined role-playing fantasy elements with Bejeweled-esque gameplay. Developer Infinite Interactive is now following up that effort with an entirely new version of the series in Puzzle Quest: Galactrix. According to GameSpot, Galactrix differs from Challenge of the Warlords in several key ways, including a sci-fi theme, a new hex-shaped board, modified gameplay rules, and the ability to acquire and customize ships. According to Infinite Interactive, Galactrix is currently slated for release on DS, PSP, PC, and Xbox Live Arcade. There is no official release date, although Infinite hopes to release the game in 2008. According to an interview on GameSpot, the developer also hopes to port the system to multiple systems, much as they did with Challenge of the Warlords. Below is the official fact sheet from Infinite Interactive: Galactrix is a unique blend of puzzle, rpg and strategy genres, set in a sci-fi world. It might best be described as a match-3 puzzle game, played against an opponent. The player will spend their time playing simple addictive puzzle games, but unlike regular puzzle games, these are played versus an enemy. The opponent can be another human (in multiplayer) or an AI-controlled enemy. It has high replay value, either in single or multi-player, with potentially hundreds of hours of play. There will be a strong 2-4 player component, and excellent support for downloadable content. Overlaying all this is an engaging storyline to play through in single-player. Key Features: * Create a persistent pilot who gains skills and ships as he completes more battles. * Each enemy you fight will require different tactics. * Individual battles require only 5-10 minutes of time. * Experience a conquer-the-galaxy style campaign mode. * Find new objects to make your pilot and ship all-powerful. * Trade supplies throughout the galaxy to increase your wealth. * Meet companions who will join your crew and aid you in battle. * Take your pilot and ship online against other players. * Compete for positions on the online high score tables. * Download new content - ships, items, plans, planets, factions and missions. Source: GameSpot, Infinite Interactive GDC 08: Downloadable Content Coming to Wii Downloadable content for Wii games is finally on its way, Nintendo project leader Takashi Aoyama announced today at the Game Developers Conference. The first games to take advantage of the new functionality haven't been yet been revealed. The add-on content will be available to disc-based games and downloaded WiiWare titles. Wii Points, which can be purchased directly from Nintendo via Wii's Shop Channel or from a local electronic retailer, will be used to buy the new content for Wii games. All transactions for purchasing downloadable content would be taken care of in-game, Aoyama said. This news likely prompts gamers to wonder how they will fit the new content on their Wii's given the console's limited 512 MB of internal memory. The system does feature support for SD Cards up to 2 GB in size, although that number still pales in comparison the the storage capacities of other consoles, which range anywhere 20 GB to 120 GB. For reference, Rock Band for Xbox 360, a title that was recently confirmed to be in development for Wii, features downloadable content, and tracks for the Xbox 360 edition generally weigh in around the 40 MB mark. We'll have more on this story as information trickles in. (mmh) Source: Game|Life GDC 08: Pay and Play Service for Online Gaming Revealed Nintendo introduced today at the Game Developers Conference that it will begin charging for some online gaming experiences with the newly announced "Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Pay and Play" service. Nintendo project leader Takashi Aoyama revealed the subscription-based service, which will allow gamers to subscribe on a game-by-game basis, during a GDC presentation. It's not especially clear at this time which games or services players will have to pay for in order to utilize the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, or how much it will cost to add Pay and Play per game. We're also not sure if we'll be paying for this service for both Wii and DS games, or just console ones. It does appear that Nintendo will use Wii Points as the official form of currency for Pay and Play. In order to allay some of the confusion the new service might cause with gamers, Nintendo has announced a red-colored icon that will appear on the packaging of all Pay and Play titles, in lieu of the traditional blue circular icon that has accompanied previously released titles compatible with the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. More details about this story as it develops. Source: Game|Life GDC 08: Sakurai Says No DLC Planned for Brawl There's nothing left to add to the already beefy Super Smash Bros. Brawl in the way of downloadable content, game creator Masahiro Sakurai said in an interview during this week's Game Developers Conference. "There are no characters that can be unlocked via connecting to WiiConnect24 or interacting in that fashion," Sakurai said when posed a question regarding the possibility of downloadable content for Brawl. "And I may be mistaken here, but the Wii doesn't have a hard drive -- it's a disc-based system -- so I don't think we'll be doing that, I don't think it's going to happen." Sakurai's comments mean hopes for additions to the -- as far as we know -- 35 fighter roster in the game have been dashed. The prominent game creator did leave out hope for a portable version of Super Smash Bros., however, although he wouldn't commit to taking part in the development. "Seeing the success that Brawl has had with the Wii remote being playing sideways, I don't think that there are control limitations that keep it from being ported to the DS," Sakurai said. "But I personally have no plans to do this myself. If, in the future, such a thing was to be planned, it would be up to Nintendo to decide how and when and in what way they would like to create that sort of game." (mmh) Source: IGN Low Review Scores Bug Electronic Arts A five point drop in the average review scores compiled by Metacritic of Electronic Arts games has the developing and publishing giant concerned, the EA CEO John Riccitiello said in a conference call Thursday. "There is nothing acceptable about that," Riccitiello said of the drop in average review score of EA titles from 77 to 72. "Our core game titles are accurately measured and summarized by these assessments, and that is a very big deal." The Electronic Arts CEO made it clear that his company won't be chasing a magic review score number, however. "The process often gets in the way more than it helps," Ritccitiello said. "That sort of circus has unfortunately sort of defined our company for too long. You don't cash Metacritic, you cash checks." (mmh) Source: GamePro GDC 08: Europe Gets Commodore 64 VC Content PRESS RELEASE Already a firm favourite with Wii owners, Virtual Console is once again expanding its catalogue, this time with the addition of a whole new games format. Later this year, Wii owners will be able to enjoy classic titles from the best selling personal computer of all time, the Commodore 64. These titles join classic gems from the likes of Nintendo, Sega, Turbografx and NeoGeo already available via the Wii Shop Channel. The release of the Commodore 64 in 1982 was an historic moment for the computer and video games industry. According to the Guinness Book of World Records it remains the best selling single computer model of all time, with an estimated 22 million units sold. Its immense popularity saw an unrivalled collection of over 4,000 rich games titles released through its production lifetime (1982-1994), helping to establish the C64 as a ‘gamers favourite’. Now, some of the greatest Commodore 64 titles will be made available for Wii owners to download and play via the Virtual Console service. Bala Keilman, CEO of Commodore Gaming, commented, “The massive impact the Commodore 64 had on video-gaming is still evident today with many gamers remembering the computer and its games with great fondness. By working with Nintendo of Europe, we are ensuring that future generations of gamers can play some of the best and most popular titles that kick-started the computer games revolution and so keep the C64 legacy in gamers hearts.” Laurent Fischer, Managing Director of European Marketing & PR of Nintendo Europe adds, “We are extremely pleased to be working with Commodore Gaming to provide even more retro hits for Wii owners to choose from on Virtual Console. With over 184 classic titles now available to enjoy, Virtual Console on Wii is a great way for users to access a breadth of classic retro games. We hope that this great choice of games will bring nostalgia to our gaming fans, while an entirely new generation of video game players can experience a host of classic games for the very first time.” Among the first titles from Commodore 64 which will be made available on Virtual Console are International Karate and Uridium. These great titles will be bolstered by regular updates to the line-up from the Commodore 64 back catalogue. Virtual Console games from Commodore 64 will be available from the Wii Shop Channel soon and can be downloaded for 500 Wii Points each. Currently these titles will only be available on the European Wii Shop Channel. (as) Source: GoNintendo Mario Kart Wii Detailed Mario Kart Wii will feature the best of both multiplayer worlds, allowing two players on the same Wii console to log on to th Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and compete with up to ten additional players. The online functionality of Mario Kart Wii was detailed recently in an IGN preview. In addition to the hybrid online and local multiplayer feature, the game will look to provide a Mario Kart Channel to allow players the opportunity to track rankings and download tournaments and weekly challenges. Currently, the Mario Kart Channel will be in-game only, although Nintendo has not made a definitive decision. Also of note in Mario Kart Wii are the control options, which look to be as plentiful as another hotly anticipated Wii title -- Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Much like Nintendo's mascot fighter, Mario Kart will allow players the opportunity to play the game with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, Wii Remote exclusively or a GameCube controller if they decide not to use the plastic steering wheel attachment included with every copy of the game. The Wii Remote locks into the steering wheel attachment, similar to how the Wii Zapper accessory funtions. Mario Kart Wii releases stateside in 2008; a specific release date has not been announced at this time. Japanese and European audiences have definitive release dates, as the game is set to release in those markets on April 10 and April 11, respectively. While Nintendo is asking developers to keep file sizes as small as possible, there is no publicized limit on file size. WiiWare titles will have different pricing structures much like Virtual Console games, which are set at different amounts of Wii Points depending on which system they appeared on. In addition, Nintendo is not requiring developers to have demos for their software, although they are planning to give information about games the same way Nintendo of Japan is doing with the Everybody's Nintendo Channel. Among launch titles for the service, Square-Enix's Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As A King is named prominently. My Life As A King is a sequel to the popular GameCube predecessor, but places the focus on running a kingdom in the Crystal Chronicles world. Nintendo noted that “[there] have been a few reports of minor incidents during overly enthusiastic play. The Wii Remote is perfectly safe when used as instructed: use a firm grip, don’t let go, use the wrist strap and make sure the game-play area has ample open space." Furthermore, "When beginning any new physical activity, it’s best to pace yourself and not overdo it. Some games, including Wii Sports, include in-game reminders for players to take a break every now and then." Nintendo also noted that it would be including the Wii remote jacket with new Wii controllers to enhance safety while using the device. (mmh) Source: Nintendo Blu-ray Pulling Ahead in DVD Format Wars The end appears to be in sight for the high-definition DVD format wars, as the Sony-backed Blu-ray technology appears to be distancing itself considerably from rival Toshiba's HD DVD format. The latest connecting punches come courtesy of online movie rental service Netflix, which announced recently its backing of Sony's high-def DVD format, and retailing giant Wal-Mart, which made public its intentions to carry Blu-Ray discs exclusively. Both Netflix and Wal-Mart carried HD DVD and Blu-ray discs while the two formats battled for market share, until these recent announcements. Even Toshiba looks ready to concede the format wars, according to a source within the company speaking anonymously to Reuters. The unnamed source says Toshiba is in the final stages of an exit strategy from the HD DVD format, and that an official announcement is pending. If the source's information indeed is true, Toshiba stands to lose hundreds of millions of dollars in order to phase out HD DVD production. The end of the Blu-ray/HD DVD battle signals a win for Sony, the PlayStation 3 makers who included its high-definition DVD technology in the console. Microsoft's Xbox 360, which has a compatible external HD DVD drive that only plays movies with the console, could see a switch to Blu-ray in light of the Microsoft's Vice President of Global Marketing Jeff Bell saying recently that the company has a "long history of partnership with Sony."
