For a game to break even on the Wii, at least 300,000 units need to be sold as opposed to 600,000 for 360/PS3. Based on the list below, it seems that 91.1% of third-party titles are not breaking even on the Wii, meaning third-parties are taking losses, sometimes heavily. This is not good for the long-term as it goes to show that the Nintendo core gamers prefer Nintendo-published titles over third-party games by a majority. Casual gamers usually buy one or two games a year (on top of Wii Sports), which means that the casual market is enjoying Wii Sports, Nintendo-published games and perhaps a few third-party games that are tailored to them. As for the New Gamer, it is likely that they are sticking to Wii Sports and the "Wii Brand" such as Wii Play and in the near future, we can expect huge sales from Wii Fit. It is apparent that third-parties have neglected the Wii from the start, and most developers prefer to develop "moderate" Wii games, while bringing the big budget Triple-A titles to the 360/PS3. If losses are taken from the Wii and Nintendo continues to dominate the software market share on the Wii, it could mean a big problem for the Wii in the coming years. We could see third-parties moving away from Wii development, or establishing budget games as the best choice for the platform. Developers feel that the Wii will become a fad by the end of next year, so it seems that the best option would be the throw anything at the system. On the other hand, if the Wii continues to outsell the competition by the beginning of 2009, this could mean trouble for third-parties. Perhaps third-parties should re-consider their strategies, especially marketing ones. Big name games such as GTA or Final Fantasy should be considered for the Wii if third-parties wish to profit off of the system in the long run. At the same time, perhaps the mainstream gaming media should continue to promote third-party Wii titles, rather than be biased. Many gaming magazines usually have 360/PS3 games on their cover is an example of such bias. Zack & Wiki is a great example of what can be done. When first announced by Capcom, gamers completely ignored the game. As soon as IGN began to push the game as the "must-have" third-party title on the Wii for 2007, the game has seen much deserved hype and could become 2007's top-selling third-party game on the Wii. In the end it comes to the gamers. We the gamers need to take notice of what third-party title deserves our hard-earned money, and explore "new worlds", rather than be bound by Nintendo-only titles. The following is a list of these third-party games that have not broken even on the Wii (based on VG Charts): Marvel Ultimate Alliance - 250,000 Cooking Mama - 210,000 Elebits - 210,000 Spider-Man 3 - 210,000 Trauma Center Second Opinion - 210,000 NFS: Carbon - 200,000 Tony Hawk Downhill Jam - 160,000 Super Swing Golf - 150,000 Rapala Tournament Fishing** - 130,000 SSX Blur - 130,000 GT Pro Series - 120,000 Rampage Total Destruction** - 120,000 Madden NFL 08* - 110,000 Powerful Pro Baseball 14* - 110,000 The Bigs - 110,000 Cars - 100,000 Harry Potter OotP - 100,000 Master of Festivals* - 100,000 Monster 4×4 - 100,000 One Piece: Unlimited Adventure - 100,000 PoP: Rival Swords - 100,000 Tamagotchi** - 100,000 Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08* - 100,000 Transformers - 100,000 Mortal Kombat Armageddon - 90,000 Avatar - 80,000 Bleach* - 80,000 PotC: At Worlds End - 80,000 Shrek the Third - 80,000 Spongebob Squarepants - 80,000 TMNT - 80,000 Bust-A-Move Bash - 70,000 Crayon Shin-Chan - 70,000 Happy Feet - 70,000 Boogie - 60,000 Blazing Angels - 60,000 Fishing Master - 60,000 Scarface - 60,000 Splinter Cell Double Agent - 60,000 Far Cry Vengeance - 50,000 Harvest Moon* - 50,000 Heatseeker - 50,000 Ice Age 2 Meltdown - 50,000 Koroinpa Marble Mania - 50,000 Meet the Robinsons - 50,000 SD Gundam - 50,000 Surf's Up - 50,000 The Godfather: Backhand Edition - 50,000 Victorious Boxers* - 50,000 Bomberman Land - 30,000 Grim Adventures of B&M - 30,000 Momotarou Electric Railway - 30,000 Open Season - 30,000 Ratatouille - 30,000 World Series of Poker - 30,000 Ant Bully - 20,000 Alien Syndrome - 20,000 Barnyard - 20,000 Bionicle Heroes - 20,000 Brunswick Pro Bowling - 20.000 Chicken Little AiA - 20,000 Fanatastic Four - 20,000 Legend of the Dragon - 20,000 Sims 2 Pets - 20,000 Wing Island - 20,000 Case Closed! - 10,000 Densha de Go! - 10,000 Driver: Parallel Lines - 10,000 G1 Jockey - 10,000 JP Fist of the North Star - 10,000 Neo Pactio Fight - 10,000 World Championship Poker - 10,000 |
