Well, the Toyfare issue detailing the JLU and Titans cancellations has arrived and scanned in by the Titansgo.net crew. ToyFare #108 came out last week, with a 2-page feature on the Teen Titans and JLU cancellations. In it, WB Animation president Sander Schwartz says they were cancelled because they "lasted longer and for more episodes than most successful animated shows, and it's time to give them a bit of a rest." He later adds: "In animation and the kids' business in general, you're not making money from TV, but from a variety of sources: home video, merchandising and licensing. That's just the traditional cycle. There isn't a compelling reason to do new shows." ("shows" refers to new episodes, not new series). Of course many fans will find those statements questionable, so take it as you will. TT producer Glen Murakami states contentment with how the show and Season 5 ended, while leaving it open. Regarding a revival, he is optimistic: "That's still a possibility. But it's too soon to tell." Schwartz adds, regarding more DTV movies: "I think you will be seeing more DC-based long-form video products within the next few years," and says the DTV format allows them to try "new and different" material. Speaking of merchandise, ToyFare observes that Bandai has yet to announce their next Teen Titans toys (the Doom Patrol figures, soul-self Raven, zombified Slade, etc.). The lack of new toys does lessen ways fans can show support for Teen Titans, but luckily we have "Trouble in Tokyo" and the Season 2 DVDs to look forward to. Let's give them their "compelling reason" to continue Teen Titans! Scans: http://images.titansgo.net/books/toyfare108_ttjlu1.jpg http://images.titansgo.net/books/toyfare108_ttjlu2.jpg Now I'm really depressed. Makes you wonder why bother forming attachments to shows period since longetity is such a curse apparently. But at least Murakami isn't opposed to a revival, and that's always a plus. My only issue with the article is that we know what JLU's next season would have been but not the Titans'. Augh. And to make things worse, Bandai are being cowards. That's just inexcusable considering how much money their Titan line has given them. Companies, who can figure them out? |

I'm telling you, this is so...I'm just really... Inarticulate? Uh, no, I'm just really annoyed. Jesus Christ. You have a fanbase that's snapping up toys and stuff by the pile, stop making new episode and you lose that incoming flow of money. Christ. |

I have an idea. It's expensive, but an idea. We create a sort of shadow coporation, a buisness front, something that seems big. We get a bunch of big strong types, get some guns for them, preferably ones that can be hidden. We get together and walk into Cartoon Network HQ, get to the president himself, then we reveal our guns, and our intentions. Thus, we poblicly commence the hostile takeover of Cartoon Network. I have one request... Make me president. Now now, I know what you're thinking. but running something this big requires some working sense, and a good command ability. Not to mention this requires someone smart. We CAN bring back the Titans. We can bring them back as before. All VAs the same. We could even have a small hand in the story arcs. Give DC something fun to do with a new episode or two. Do a little something with Terra, maybe... But for the most part, leave the writing to the people who have experience. Just an idea. |

Titansgo.net added further commentary to this with another article. A recent "Animated Shorts" column from Newsarama discusses the current Cartoon Network trend of dropping DC animated series, such as JLU and Teen Titans. According to their source at Warner Bros. Animation, this trend continues with the imminent cancellation of "Krypto the Super Dog" (CN's last DC animated series). The source offers a reason why: "CN wants to focus on their own properties," says the source. "While I can understand this, I think that Krypto needs saving. I know it's not necessarily the most popular show on CN, but, it is a WB Animation/DC property, and so saving it could have very positive repercussions on the long-term DC/CN relationship. We weren't able to save JLU or Teen Titans because we didn't know that they were ending until too late. But if we act now to start a 'Save Krypto' letter writing campaign to the powers that be at CN, it might make a huge difference in the future of the show. Plus it shows CN there is a large fan base for the DC properties on their network, possibly paving the way for a return to CN of several other DC properties" The licensing split between CN and WB a few months ago appears to be related after all. However, it seems unlikely that CN wouldn't be aware of the large DC animation fanbase (and its marked history), contrary to what the source claims. Columnist Steve Fritz later provides his own input. Read the full article here. Link: http://www.newsarama.com/AniShorts/Ani277.html Of course, I said this back in January, so I was...right? Haha. Dies. Wish I wasn't. |
