Cartoon Network aired a movie last night, April 22, at 9:30et called Ultimate Avengers. I was just wondering if any others saw it and wanted to comment about it. I, myself, taped it and enjoyed almost every second. Even if it was about characters I knew nothing about. Especially, since they're Marvel characters. The return of Captain America, the Hulk and Black Widow, not to mention IronMan was done exceedingly well. I enjoyed how their ego's got in the way and eventually disintigrated the team, only to have them fight together in the end. I've only heard of Captain America and seen a few things with the Hulk, so I'm not experts on them. Although this movie makes me want to be. Did anyone see this by chance? |

Getting to see a Marvel movie on a DC network was rather amusing. Unfortunately I didn't watch much beyond...7 minutes because I was lazy and I don't do Ultimate. I tried to get interested, but the voice cast felt rather off to me with the exception of Olivia D'Abo as the Black Widow. Nice casting irony as her mother was a Russian sniper in the James Bond film "The Living Daylights". Beyond that, the voices rather grated on me. And yes, that's the thing with Ultimate vs. Regular: Regular joined/stayed for mostly noble purposes, the Ultimates don't as such. Kinda fall apart at a drop of the hat, really. At least when it started. CN's editing was certainly amusing. Banner to Rogers: "I have something important to tell you." Commerical break. Me: "Right after this." They are adopting TNT's shoddy editing as TNT pulls that a lot recently with their Law and Order reruns. That and since it's PG-13, I expect a lot of CN's crappy editing and figured why bother watching. Since I don't do the Ultimate, Nether will be the better source. I'm more old school Avengers, so I can be Virgil to your Dante for that. (Or go to guy for more specifics) I do hope the project succeeds, we need Marvel shows and makes me wish that animated Avengers show in 99-00 had some traction. We did Spidey, Iron Man, Hulk, FF, need the Avengers most of all. |

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Charaxes. Anyway, here's the breakdown. Steve Rogers was one frail guy. So frail that the army wouldn't let him fight in World War II unless he agreed to be their test subject for an experiment that would supposedly transform an ordinary man into a borderline superhuman soldier. The project succeeded, transforming Rogers into a physically perfect specimen at the peak of human potential. The army dubbed him Captain America and the rest is history. Hank and Janet Pym . . . let's just say their relationship was worse in the Ultimates than it was depicted in Ultimate Avengers. One time, they had this really nasty fight (that's an understatement) and it put Jan in the hospital. Captain America was so pissed off that he went after Hank and clobbered him . . . all while Hank was 60 feet tall. Iron Man? In the Ultimates, Tony Stark is suffering from a brain tumor that gives him six months to five years left to live, so he decided to do something with his life. This isn't mentioned in Ultimate Avengers, and another difference between the two versions of the Avengers is that Tony's identity is a secret in Ultimate Avengers while the general public knows he's Iron Man in Ultimates. Black Widow? Well, DC seems to like her, and she's a rather interesting character. In the original comics, she was a product of the Cold War, having been trained by the Soviet Union as a super-spy. In Ultimates, she's basically the Six Million Dollar Woman, having been equipped with endoskeletal cybernetics that increase her physical abilities. She and Iron Man dated for a while, until it turned out that she was a traitor. Ultimate Avengers doesn't really say anything about her background. Hulk . . . the basic story is that Bruce Banner got caught in a gamma radiation explosion that transformed him into a super-strong, rampaging green behemoth. That's the story in most versions of the Hulk, but in Ultimates, the transformation was basically the result of an attempt to recreate the Super-Soldier Formula. Hell, one of the recurring themes in the Ultimate Marvel Universe is that people all over the world are trying to create their own superhuman warriors. Thor . . . in most versions, he really is the son of Odin and the Norse god of thunder. In Ultimates, nobody knows if that's a fact or if he's just a super-powered nutcase. Dark Charaxes noted that the Ultimate Avengers are more self-centered to a degree than the regular Avengers. The reason for that, I figure, is that Ultimate Marvel is essentially a 21st-century spin on characters and stories that were started in the 60s. It's also a darker, more cynical twist in step with our darker, more cynical times. Nowadays, nobody really believes that a bunch of people would come together for entirely noble/selfless reasons and Ultimates/Ultimate Avengers plays to that pessimism. Still, it's a good movie . . . and what editing? When Captain America got banged up by the Hulk, I saw blood. They didn't edit it that much. |

The Black Widow is funny in the original universe as she's been with everyone: Daredevil, Hawkeye, pretty sure of Wonder Man, various villains, getting the reputation of the biggest slut in the MU. Just here, she is playing on the Cold War irony as the Russians' more successful spy vs. the American symbol of patriotism in a quirky romance. That and the overall design, playing on her attributes (yes, her bust) and sex appeal. On a funny note, it was written by the man behind the Ultimates: Mark Millar. Huh. Millar plays the fantastic plot but he needs to hone his dialogue and setup, at least from the last time I checked (his Wolvie stunt in 03). As for the editing, eh, just my trick knee for these things and seeing WB's record at editing PG-13 movies. It was my presumption but then given the risque factors in JLU, I shouldn't have been so cynical. It's just easier when it's a cable station you know won't edit vs. ones that do. My kudos to putting it at a responsible timeslot, given how they aired Batman at 8:00, they are learning. Edit: Propers for Nether for summing the characters up nicely. |

The movie was ok in my opinion. I didn't watch the first half of it. From what I saw from the previews. Though I rather have watched JLU instead of "Ultimate Avengers: The Movie." I'm glad they had Ironman & Caption America in it. Two classic heros from my time of watching Spiderman. They could have done something better with the aliens plus having battles fighting each other. But that's me. Also they could have done something else to Banner/The Hulk. -_-; |

They sure make him out to be a psycho. The way he talks makes you wonder..... And didn't IronMan and Hank call him a girl at one point? Thanks for the backgrounds. It really helps. |

My boyfriend has the DVD and we watched it over his place the last time we hung out together. I thought it was really good, for Marvel's first animated feature. My boyfriend even said that he thought of auditioning when they were searching for people to voice the characters, but he didn't go through with it. Didn't anyone else notice that Grey DeLisle was in this movie? She was the voice of Wasp. I didn't realize she was in it until the ending credits. |
