NEW YORK (AP) -- Two small, struggling television networks, UPN and WB, will merge to form a new network called The CW, executives from them companies that own them said Tuesday.

The announcement was made by executives from CBS Corp., which owns UPN, and Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc., which owns WB.

Both UPN and WB had struggled to compete against larger rivals in the broadcast TV business, including Walt Disney Co.'s ABC, News Corp.'s Fox and CBS Corp.'s CBS.

The new network will launch in the fall, the executives said, and both UPN and WB will shut down. It will be a 50-50 partnership between Warner Bros. and CBS, and the network will be carried on stations owned by the Tribune Co., which is a minority owner of the WB network.

Leslie Moonves, chief executive of CBS Corp., said the new network will air 30 hours of programming seven days a week aimed in part at young audiences.

Barry Meyer, the head of Warner Bros., said the network would be run by the current executives of UPN and WB.

The article here.

WB, if you didn't know, includes Cartoon Network. Sparky on the BBxRae Shrine posted this article there, and I figured I might as all be shown here too.

...your thoughts? I'm not sure what to think at the moment...

I knew this for at least a couple of months. UPN is dead to me since there is no Enterprise. WB, beyond Kids WB and Pokemon, don't really care there either. Although I wouldn't mind getting into One Tree Hill plus my friend likes Supernatural. So for that, I kinda sorta care but otherwise...

Nah.

Besides, this won't damage CN much, not like their arraignment with Kids WB in the weekday 00-01 days.

Ruined Toonami beyond belief. But that's another rant for another time.

Edit: If this does crush CN, good. Since there is no Titans or JLU anymore, I don't care and I left the building.

I'm sure they know of TT's successes on CN, there's a slight chance they may try to recapitalize on that and ressurect it.

So I'm playing on fancifulness, a guy can dream, can't he?

Well, they did play two full seasons on Titans on Kids WB compared to most of CN's programming that has been rotated on there. Foster had all but two airings and none were the pilot.

So maybe but I'd be more optimistic if Kids WB wasn't so...idiotic.

This raises soooo many questions....

What is the purpose of the union (besides keeping UPN & WB afloat)??

I feel like I'm the only one that doesn't know anything about this.
Maybe I should start watching the news...

What is going to happen to cable TV?

Don't feel bad- I thought this was arelatively new information, until DC said he already knew for months. I don't think it was on the news anyway.

I've known for a really long time- read it in Entertainment Weekly- but I didn't stop to think, idiotically, that the merger includes CN. Wow....I don't know.

I thought that CN was planning to merge with Nick? Since that's one of the most popular kid's channel right now, after CN stopped all their shows that were worth watching, that is. <_< I don't know where I heard this from (either here or somewhere else) but I'm positive that's what I heard.

I don't know what to think about this, to be honest. I do know that CW is going to be inheriting shows like "Smallville," which is currently on the WB (and not showing on ABC Family anymore because 7th Heaven has gone into back-to-back mode and took over its 7:00 PM time slot).

-shrugs- Possible. After all, Nick's Avatar show has been doing really well lately.

We'll just have to wait until it happens, I suppose. I'm just going to miss 'Adult Swim', if they get rid of it. That's the only place I have access to anime.

:o Same here! I really hope they don't get rid of it. That's the only time I even bother to watch anything on that channel even though it's late and I have school in the morning. :P Guess all I can do now is hope. -_-
