One of the distinctive features of DC is their major events over the years, sometimes for hype (ID Crisis), others for necessity (Crisis) but all for dissertation of impact on the comic world and the fiction worlds within. Let's take a look at the three most heavy on the DCU and the real time applications. In 1986, DC was at a crossroads with their stories in their lines constantly clashing with their poor editing and multiple AUs. So the decision was made to finally clean up all the editing, by ending the Earth 2s and AUs and unite everything (AUs, timelines) into one. Writer Marv Wolfman setup everything up perfectly until DC editors threw in this cavent: the characters all remember what happened in Crisis. Wolfman's effect was simply a restart, to have everyone forget everything before and start over. Unfortunately given this development, this led to other problems, via chronological. Thus, we enter Zero Hour in 1994, an issue dealing with time continuity and collapse of several DC issues, one being Green Lantern but that's another story. The timeline was being convoluted, brought on by the memories of Crisis so DC fixed its revamp. Forgive, I don't know much of this one. All was well with the editing but DC had a new problem: Marvel's remergence from bankruptcy and being the dominant force and DC tried something different: involving their characters. This is Identity Crisis, with top art, DC torn apart the characters, hyping some with loser status (Dr. Light) while overlaying the drama to outright miserable angst with the editoral decision of making Tim Drake being a Dick Grayson clone, to make a profit but this was different as it was more of a sign of the times to DC's slippery slope to angst and nothing else. It wasn't a necessity like the other events, but the impact is still noteworthy, if nothing else than on the comic industry itself and how the fanbase lapped it all up. And what of the upcoming Infinite Crisis? Any thoughts on this? Despite the revamps and renewals, the implications are still revelant as they were 20, 10 years ago, does it give pause about how DC does their editing? Which event means to the most to you as a fan of a character or as part of the audience? Does it make you want DC more for such events? I do believe Crisis was needed by the last minute edit rather made it pointless, so hence Zero Hour was needed to a degree. ID Crisis wasn't as such although it does show how much DC cares little about their characters which is an irony as that's all DC has. But it does turn me off DC more and more now. However my views are different than most, so let's leave that out there. But to the DC fans and observers, thoughts? |

Infinite Crisis . . . I've been following it and all its prologue miniseries and tie-ins over the DC Comics' site's Message Boards. It seems interesting, despite your objections to it, Dark Weezing. One thiing I've discovered is that Earth-2 Superman (retconned Golden Age Superman) seems intent on restoring his own universe at the cost of this one, claiming that it has become corrupt. What do you think of that? Many comics fans have been complaining for years about the darkening of superheroes both Marvel and DC. So . . . do you think that the current DCU is too dark and needs to be changed? Or are you fine with the DCU as it is? |

I wouldn't complain if DC delivered, but they always seem to wimp out the last minute (Crisis' rememberance, decision to make Hawk Monarch because of his book canceling, ID Crisis' ending). So yeah, past experience makes me edgy. But it is curious they're using Earth 2 Superman considering Earth 2 was gone in Crisis. But I do think using him is more shock factor considering Batman would be too easy to snap or GL given the Parallax debacle. As for the shift to dark: DC was always darker but in recent years, the darkness is no longer subtle and out in the open. Even the fanboys can't dispute this (Lord knows they tried to suppress) but even if the tone gets darker, the DCU needs to change for either story reasons or behind the scene reasons (The editor problem). The fandom is growing and they are tired with the dark approach, it's not working. There is no other available solutions to where to change but at least the motivation to change is here at last. It was needed since Zero Hour actually. |

Yeah, but the Goths are happy about the growing darkness thing. |

I dunno if the goth market is accessible to the comic world. Generally comic fans are kinda singular, not as bad as say, Control Freak, but bad enough. There are rarities however (Nether, me and um...). Although with the gothic form being mainstream (thank you Hot Topic, blargh), it's not outside the realm. But I dunno if the goths care if the characters feel like they do and the whining of misery of existence, but it does make you wonder if you want to be a superhero in DC anymore. |

I've been hearing a lot about the one-year jump all the DC titles will be taking in March, which is just two months from now. A lot is supposed to change One Year Later. Oliver Queen, the Green Arrow, will become mayor of Star City. Batman will not be such an a**hole. (I'm holding you to that, DC.) Nightwing may or may not be Dick Grayson. Ravager (Rose Wilson) and Kid Devil will join the Teen Titans. There will be a Titans East. There will not be a Justice League for a while. Robin will have a new costume, more reminiscent of his TNBA outfit. And so on. So what do you think of these changes? |

By the numbers:
Ollie will be mayor? He got a better deal in life since he died. Hee. All those years ago.
As long as Batman isn't weepy, I don't care.
Huh. Then Dick needs to get work somehow, too bad his Bludhaven cop job is...gone, I think. Or maybe he'll swap genders with it to confuse villains. Shifty eyes.
Rose joining them...again?! As long as she doesn't pull "I'm really Slade's Apprentice all along" or wear orange and black, I'd be fine. Even though it would be funny.
Saw that coming with Johns and his Future Titans arc last year. Proof the cartoon influences the show.
At least it keeps creators from ruining it anymore. Looks at Morrison, Waid.
Umm.....pass? It's going to be a wacky year ahead. Yee Haw. |
