A pinevine swallowtail butterfly visited me and my plant today. I squatted near the plant and the butterfly was not shy.. It even took a moment to show me that it had a broken wing - landed on the ground near me and spread its wings so I could see .. In spite of the broken wing, the butterfly flew beautifully well and feasted on the nectar of the indian tobacco plant.. lobelia inflata is also known as indian tobacco plant. the root is sometimes used for love 'potions', btw... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lobelia_inflata some info on the plant.. Lobelia has a long, if not chequered history of medicinal usage. It has been widely used by Native Americans, especially those living in the eastern United States, such as the Penobscot Indians of New England, who used it for many reasons, not all medicinal. It is used ceremoniously in rain dances and conversely to ward off storms. It is placed on graves, and even burned to keep annoying gnats at bay. Some make use of it in love potions, whilst others use it as an antidote to such charms. Medicinally, the Native Americans use it for a number of ailments. It is smoked like tobacco (hence its common name of Indian tobacco), and used in this manner to combat asthma, coughs and other ailments of the respiratory system. It is also used to treat venereal disease, earache, stiff necks and fevers to name but a few. http://www.naturalhealthcourses.com/Reading_Room/lobelia.htm a little info on love and marriage traditions.. Many Native American Indian tribes have traditions associated with love and the act of marriage; traditions include love potions and the symbolism of nature's union. Both before and after the act of marriage, love potions are used by many Native American tribes; special plants, herbs and amulets are used in these traditional medicines. It was believed by many that the combination of the spiritual, magical, physical and natural elements would produce success in love and relationships. The Use of Love Potions by the Iroquois Tribes The Iroquois Indian tribes used herbs to 'dream results' of love; plants used include Indian tobacco (Lobelia inflata) and blue Lobelia (Lobelia spicata). This 'love potion' was placed under the dreamer's pillow before sleeping to induce the desired result. Lobelia plant species were often used in such love potions. The Navajo Union of Earth Woman and Sky Man The joining of a man and woman in the Navajo Indian marriage ceremony represents the union of the Navajo cosmos, Earth Woman and Sky Man; in sand paintings, Earth woman is shown as blue and from the center of her abdomen radiate the four sacred plants of squash, corn, tobacco and beans. Sky Man is shown in the color black with the moon, sun and stars radiating from his abdomen; a corn of pollen connects the two mouths, representing inseparability and fertility. Corn is said to be life to the Navajo Indians and the marriage ceremony is the start of the road to life, that of the 'Pollen Path'. more on plants and native american marriage traditions... http://sharonfalsetto.suite101.com/native-...aditions-a89882 here is the butterfly who visited today on the indian tobacco plant.. ![]() ![]() and now here is the broken wing.. ![]()

The butterflies are the guardians to the Universal Law of Change...guides all aspects of change.. a butterfly is a joyful totem of metamorphosis and transformation...of color, beauty and movement... some more info on butterfly medicine.. http://wolfs_moon.tripod.com/clanbutterfly.html Butterfly: metamorphosis and transformation Scientific research has shown that the butterfly is the only living being capable of changing entirely its genetic structure during the process of transformation: the caterpillar's DNA is totally different from the butterfly's. Thus, it is the symbol of total transformation. Butterfly represents a need for change and greater freedom, and at the same time it represents courage: one requires courage to carry out the changes necessary in the process of growth. Its Medicine is related to the air and the mental powers. It teaches us to find clarity in the mental processes, to organize projects or to figure out the next step in our internal growth. If Butterfly is your Power Animal or if you feel in any way attracted to it, this means you are ready to undergo some kind of transformation. Examine which stage calls your attention the most: the egg is the beginning, the birth of some project or idea. The larva is de decision to manifest something in the physical world. The cocoon has to do with "going inside", either through insight or the development of the project or idea. The breaking of the cocoon deals with sharing the splendor of your creation with the whole world. Once you understand the stage you are on, you can discover which is the next step. http://www.crystalinks.com/totemanimals.html I am grateful for the butterfly who came here today...

It's interesting that this butterfly has 23 spots on his outspread wings (looking down from above on him).
