I hope you are all well (at least as well as can be expected, under the circumstances) I can imagine that just about everyone in the Windy City and surroundings will have very sore nerves, I wonder if alcohol sales will rise (especially whisky) as people try to use the amber liquid to steady their nerves. I hope the El remains structurally sound... Anyway, I wish you well. Simon

howdy simon, yeah things were mighty edgy in the wee hours. plus we got a load of snow. The epicenter was not too far from Fermilab, btw. They are centering the quake right where my oldest daughter lives. She was freaked out and grab her little one while the bed was shaking. The was a loud sound with it too - her hubby thought it might just be snow plow or something... I had had a couple dreams of a quake and shaking/swaying a handful of days ago.. The other weird thing was that on Saturday, I was out in that neck of the woods. i saw over a hundred geese in the air - all scattered, trying to get into formation, but unable to.. Someone else said he never saw anything like that.. The geese looked obviously disoriented.. they were flying every which way... so odd. And yeah, i hear ya about the El as well as some of the bridges in the area... They have downgraded the quake to a 3.8 now...and the usgs said it is not the new madrid. i had the news on tv and people were calling in - one woman from a nearby suburb said her husband her a magnetic sound right before the bed started shaking like crazy... wild, wow. |

Rare earthquake rattles northern Ill.; no damage 51 minutes ago CHICAGO — A small pre-dawn earthquake has hit northern Illinois, startling residents as far away as Michigan and Iowa, but no damage or injuries were immediately reported. The U.S. Geological Survey says the 3.8-magnitude earthquake hit about 45 miles northwest of Chicago at 4 a.m. Wednesday. Scientists say the epicenter was southwest of the village of Gilberts in Kane County. The USGS initially reported the magnitude as 4.3 but later downgraded it. USGS geophysicist Amy Vaughan says such quakes are rare in northern Illinois. She says residents in Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan also reported feeling the quake. In Kane County, sheriff's dispatchers were overwhelmed with calls, and several residential and business alarms were triggered. But spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler says no injuries or damage have been reported. ___ On the Net: U.S. Geological Survey: http://www.usgs.gov/ |

This mornings quake has been on the news all day. they are saying that the quake epicenter is in a corn and soybean field in a Pingeree Grove - smaller country kind of town. They are also saying the fault line is an ancient one known as the Sandwich fault line. |

Hi L&B, Pleased to hear that you are all Ok, albeit somewhat shaken up. I noted that this was not the New Madrid, but that does not mean much. Could it have been a precursor? Of course it is hoped not. I note that the USGS downgraded its intensity...hmm. We've heard about 'Snowmageddon' in Washington DC, but not that you had snow too. Be well. Simon |

howdy simon - Yeah we got a foot of snow the same day. On the news they were talking with a usgs guy, and asked him if he thought it was a precursor - he said he didnt think so. He also said any aftershocks would be minimal. i didnt check to see if there were any.. Anyway, he didnt seem to think it was a big deal at all and really wasnt very forthcoming - just answered the questions and that was it. One other thing he said was that if this quake was in California or Florida, the people would have barely noticed like they did here and it wouldnt have been so widely felt - the land is much different. They sure downgraded it alot, didnt they? From a 4.3 to a 3.8... seems odd that it would be downgraded so drastically. I'll say this though - if a small quake like this was felt in such a big way and so widely (in 4 different states) - then I really don't think I'd ever want to experience a larger one. hope all is fine with you

oh my L&B, a foot of snow! For us even a few inches is a lot. Once, several decades ago we had 8 inches, and before that there were severe winters with lots of snow in 1962/3 and 1947/8. From what I remember from a couple of decades ago, walking through deep snow is like hard work - even harder than water! Even if the USGS guy knows something I reckon he will keep silent, for fear of creating fear. The downgrading seems to be typical of the present era, again to make it seem like nothing and to keep people calm. I am not saying that anything IS going to happen anytime soon in your area, but I think that we are now in the season and that events can occur everywhere - especially including the well known locations along the ring of fire. Be well, Simon |
