BREAKING: 7.5 Earthquake in Iran "Panic in streets"

FARS NEWS AGENCY SAYS 7.5 MAG...

TEHRAN, Sept 10 (Reuters) - A powerful earthquake struck southern Iran on Wednesday near Bandar Abbas, site of a major Iranian oil refinery, killing at least three people and injuring 22, officials said.

The U.S. Geological Service said the quake's magnitude was 6.1 and it struck at 1100 GMT about 53 km (33 miles) west-southwest of Bandar Abbas at a depth of 34.6 miles (55 km).

Yasser Hazbavi, the head of Hormuzgan province's disaster headquarters, told Reuters at least three people were killed and 22 injured. Iranian state television quoted a Red Crescent official as saying rescue workers were searching for casualties.

PANIC

An Interior Ministry official told Reuters the quake was centred on Bander-e Khamir in the south of the country. "It might have damaged old parts of the place," the official said.

State radio reported people ran panicking into the streets.

within an hour of cern firing its first beam there were 3 earthquakes of at least 6 magnitude... 1 in iran, 1 in indonesia, 1 in japan... although when the earthquake is reported locally they were reported as around 7 magnitude, i still dont know why usgs reports them as a 6. i'd guess though that the usgs magnitude is the one to go by..

its been posted on a few sites that its odd to have 3 6+ earthquakes within the hour.. i'm not sure.

here is the usgs site (both show earthquakes up to a week ago)...
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/
and for europe...
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recent...gion/Europe.php

i found a new site (this shows earthquakes up to 48 hours ago)...
http://www.emsc-csem.org/index.php?page=home&sub=gmap

usgs shows earthquakes in the u.s. of magnitude 2.5+ but only 4+ in the rest of the world, although it does show a 3.6 on the map. i did wonder why there were some earthquakes unlisted.

this post says the earthquake hit at 3:30...??? rather than 11:00 ?.. either way the numbers are multiples of 11. unless there were two earthquakes.

Iran earthquake triggers N-bomb test scare globally
11 Sep 2008, 0126 hrs IST,TIMES NEWS NETWORK & AGENCIES

TEHRAN: At 6.1, the earthquake that rocked Iran's main oil port of Bandar Abbas, was rated "strong" but not seen as likely to cause major damage. But the shock took a toll of nerves in many world capitals as speculation that Iran had tested a nuclear bomb spread like wildfire.

The hysteria soon died down, but not before the west wondered if its worst nightmare - of a nuclear bomb in the hands of a theocratic Islamic state - had come true after all. Though Iran's nuclear capacity is unproven, US's high-pitched campaign as well as sabre-rattling by Iran's leaders has kept nations on the edge.

With Iran's leaders like President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad - who's view that the Holocaust never happened has hardly bolstered the world's confidence - equating a prospective nuclear bomb with national pride, anything could be possible. Of course, capacity has not always matched claims as the crude photo shop to cover up a failed missile launch showed, but Tehran enjoys an unpredictable reputation.

In the end, as seismic recorders delivered their findings, a collective sigh of relief might well have risen as it turned out a tectonic churn rather than a centrifuge was responsible for the Persian landmass shaking. It might still, as some US agencies might hold, have been a close call.

The quake itself took a small toll of lives according to reports which said southern Iran was rocked on Wednesday, killing four people and sending tremors across the Persian Gulf all the way to Dubai.

The country's seismological center said the magnitude 6 quake struck at 3.30pm, with the epicenter about 850 miles south of the capital Tehran in the province of Hormozgan.

In 2005, a quake in southern Iran killed 612 people. A quake flattened the same region in 2003, killing 26,000.
