Mine collapse: Six reported missing in Emery County By Russ Rizzo The Salt Lake Tribune Article Last Updated: 08/06/2007 10:32:41 AM MDT Updated 10:34 AM- A rescue crew is working to free six workers who were trapped when a mine collapsed in Emery County's Huntington Canyon early this morning. The mine, operated by Utah American Energy, collapsed just before 3 a.m., around the same time as an 4.0-magnitude earthquake, said Mary Wilson, a spokeswoman for the Bureau of Land Management. Authorities are unsure if the earthquake caused the collapse or the other way around, Wilson said, because mine collapses sometimes cause earthquakes. "They don't know if it was the chicken or the egg," Wilson said. A rescue team from a nearby mine responded and continues to work to find the workers, Wilson said about 9:30 a.m. The Price office of Utah American Energy, which operates the mine, had no information to release except to confirm there had been an unspecified incident at its Genwal mine. "We really know nothing," said Doug Johnson, corporate services director for Utah American Energy who was at the command center in Huntington, about 15 miles from the mine. "We are relying on information coming from the mine, and we haven't gotten anything yet." more - http://www.sltrib.com/news/ci_6555635 |

Utah mine owner just gave a heated news conference. Saw it on CNN. He spoke firmly that this collapse was quake related (2 quakes, first lasted over 4 mintues and the second aftershock lasted over 2 minutes). He named names and accused the press of false reporting. He also said that if everything goes right, that they could get to the trapped miners in 3 days. |
