10 die as storms hit Texas-Mexico border EAGLE PASS, Texas - Search teams worked their way through wreckage-strewn neighborhoods in this border town Wednesday after a tornado killed at least 10 people and destroyed two schools and more than 20 homes. At least of three of the victims died just across the border from Eagle Pass in Piedras Negras, Mexico, said Oscar Murillo, the city's civil protection director. On the U.S. side, five of the dead were in a mobile home when the storm slammed it against a school building, said Maverick County Judge Jose Aranda. A young girl between 4 and 6 years old, her parents, and two other adult relatives were inside, he said. Wednesday morning, several mobile homes from the community of about 26,000 residents were missing, officials said. More than 70 people were reported injured in Eagle Pass. The huge weather system that caused the destruction was plowing through the Midwest on Wednesday after spinning off tornadoes in Oklahoma and Colorado, causing flooding in Iowa and Nebraska and piling snow more than a foot deep in the Rockies. more at link.. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070425/ap_on_.../severe_weather |

Massive boulder tumbles onto Highway 285 California truck driver in Colorado has close encounter with huge rock by Jann Tracey, News2 April 25, 2007 JEFFERSON COUNTY (KWGN) — Steven Jones was lumbering up the highway with a full load on his semi-tractor trailer, as a 50-ton rock came tumbling down. Jones said he knew it could be instant death for him, a truck driver from San Diego. "Thank God I wasn't going up the street any faster than I was," said Jones, who heard the rock break loose before he saw it. "There was a loud rumbling. It sounded like a train or something." said Jones. What Jones heard next was his own heart racing. "It was beating pretty good. I got a good cardio work out." The rock landed six feet in front of his vehicle. " When it was coming down," said Jones, "I stopped and it landed in the street." According to Colorado Department of Transportation heavy spring rain washes away soil which supports boulders. Rock warnings are posted where slides are more likely. But, according to CDOT, there is little a driver can do to prepare for such an unusual event. more at link.. http://cw2.trb.com/news/kwgn-boulder-falls...oll=kwgn-home-2
