MASHPEE, Mass. (UPI) -- The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe, headquartered in Mashpee, Mass., has won its 32-year legal battle to gain recognition as a sovereign American Indian nation.

Tribe spokesman Scott Ferson said the Bureau of Indian Affairs called Tribal Council Chairman Glenn Marshall Thursday and informed him and two dozen tribal elders in attendance that the U.S. government now recognizes the Mashpees have been a distinct community since the 1620s, and were among the American Indians that befriended the Pilgrims in 1621, leading to the birth of Thanksgiving, the Boston Globe reported Friday.

"It was something that was thoroughly expected," Ferson said in a telephone interview, "but then in the moment, it carried great suspense."

Tribal Chief Vernon "Silent Drum" Lopez expressed his joy at the ruling.

"I have been proud to be Chief of this tribe many times in our history, and today that pride is greater than ever," he said. "Our story has been told for generations, and today we add a new chapter. The history of our tribe could not be complete without our sovereignty, and today we can celebrate and move forward."

It's not the great skill of a teacher that understanding will be achieved; but through the teacher's awareness of their walk with creation and their understanding of Creator and Earth Mother.
