Saugh-he, Fools Crows father once spoke, that when he was a child, he was told that his great grandfather was one of those who believed that the earth was round and turned. Fools Crows grandfather spoke, our pipe was designed to be like the earth we live on. The bowl we put the tobacco in is round, like the earth. The outside of the bowl is the endless universe where the star nation is. That is why the pipe is sacred, why it is used for every ceremony and for prayers to Wakan -Tanka. Fools Crow was the nephew of Black Elk, a Lakota Holly Man that helped many people by teaching them the traditional ways of the Lakota people. Fools Crow was Chief of the Sun Dance Ceremony. It was Fools Crows display outwardly especially by visible signs and actions with great intensity of feelings; to share his profound gifts with as many people as he could reach. Fools Crow spoke that the survival of Earth Mother depends on people sharing what they have and working together. If we do not, the whole Earth will die; first Earth Mother and then the people. Fools Crow spoke "The ones who complain and talk the most about giving away medicine secrets, are always those who know the least". Fools Crow had little time for people who attempted to keep blessings for themselves. Fools Crow agreed with Black Elk when he said, "I cure with the power that comes through me". It is not me who cures, it was the power from the outer world, the visions and the ceremonies had only made me like a hole through which the power could come to the two legged. If I thought that I was doing it myself, the hole would close up and no power could come through, then everything I did would be foolish". In the old ways there was no group solidarity idea colored by emotion and belief among the American Indians from outside observers regarding the definition of power. The general view was that power comes from a supernatural source or sources and that it is best described as an astounding and electric like energy that is poured out and is spread freely throughout every part of Earth Mother. Fools Crow spoke that "a person is called to become hollow bone for his people and anyone else he could help. Fools Crow spoke that people are not supposed to seek power for their personal use and honor. What we bones really become is a line that connects Wakan Tanka, his helpers and the community together. This tells us the direction our healing work must follow and establishes the kind of life we must live. We have to be strong and committed, otherwise we will get very little spiritual power and will probably give up the healing work. The lessons we are taught by our human teachers, as Stirrup was for me. Stressed that the traditional way of performing a ritual is more important than curing someone. Curing a single individual is only important in terms of what this teaches the entire community. The community must continue to know that Wakan Tanka and the Helpers are always with them also and they need not be afraid. Seeing a person healed gives them assurance and it gives the community strength to carry on in the face of distress and disasters. So the Medicine Person sits at the center of every important thing that goes on in their community and nation; when power is set in motion and distributed, it brings us more and even greater power. We emphasize that prevention is more important than treatment where the community and individuals are concerned. Getting ready in advance may not prevent our being hurt, but it keeps us from being destroyed. It is unfortunate, but our people have begun to forget this. They are paying a tragic price for this. They get knocked down and they do not have the strength or know the way to get up. Fools Crow taught that while we are each given natural power at birth, we are also surrounded by spiritual or supernatural power. This spiritual knowledge includes the knowledge needed to obtain power and to set it in motion. If we want to go beyond the natural power that we were born with, we must entrust ourselves to Wakan Tanka, Grandmother Earth, and the Spirits of the Four Directions. We then receive the knowledge we need to understand what we have been given and the directions for changing the darkness and its motion, walk with peace. Creator is Chief, Grayeagle ![]() |
| It's not the great skill of a teacher that understanding will be achieved; but through the teacher's awareness of their walk with creation and their understanding of Creator and Earth Mother. | |
