Trans fat warnings sought for fast food By Gary Washburn Tribune staff reporter Published October 26, 2006 Big fast food chains would be required to post trans fat warnings under a measure unveiled Wednesday by Ald. Edward Burke (14th). The proposed requirement was added to legislation Burke introduced in June. That proposal imposes strict limits on the amount of trans fats used to prepare food at restaurants that are part of companies with at least $20 million in gross annual revenues. The federal government requires trans fat content to be labeled on packaged food, but "there is no similar warning for food that is served in restaurants or for takeout," the alderman said at a meeting of the City Council's License Committee. Under his new proposal, french fry cartons, hamburger wrappers and similar wrappings would have to bear a warning that the restaurant uses cooking oils containing trans fat, which "increases the risk of coronary heart disease." Chains with table service would have to post the warning. "Trans fat is the most harmful fat there is," Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, told the committee. Some restaurants already have begun to move to cooking oils that do not contain it, he said, quoting a study attributing 50,000 heart attacks a year to the substance. In a hearing last month, a former researcher for the United States Department of Agriculture told the committee that trans fat increases the level of bad cholesterol, but that it was "murky" how much the increase had on heart disease. more at link.. http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/hea...1,1613001.story |
