Four Directions Prayer
Creator, it is I.
Thank you for today’s sunrise,
for the breath and life within me,
and for all of your creations.
Creator, hear my prayer, and honor my prayer.
As the day begins with the rising sun,
I ask, Spirit keeper of the East, Brother Eagle,
Be with me.
Fly high as you carry my prayers to the Creator.
May I have eyes as sharp as yours,
so I am able to see truth and hope on the path I have chosen.
Guide my step and give me courage to walk
the circle of my life with honesty and dignity.
Spirit keeper of the South, Wolf,
Be with me.
Help me to remember to love
and feel compassion for all mankind.
Help me to walk my path with joy and love
for myself, for others, for the four legged,
the winged ones, the plants and all creation
upon Mother Earth.
Show me it is right for me to make decisions
with my heart, even if at times, my heart becomes hurt.
Help me to grow and nurture my self worth in all ways.
Spirit Keeper of the West, Brown Bear,
Be with me.
Bring healing to the people I love and to myself.
Bring into balance the physical, mental and spiritual,
so I am able to know my place on this earth,
in life and in death.
Heal my body, heal my mind and
bring light, joy and awareness to my spirit.
Spirit Keeper of the North, White Buffalo,
Be with me.
As each day passes, help me to surrender,
with grace, the things of my youth.
Help me to listen to the quiet, and find serenity and comfort
in the silences as they become longer.
Give me wisdom so I am able to make wise choices
in all things which are put in front of me,
And when time for my change of worlds has come,
Let me go peacefully, without regrets, for the things
I neglected to do as I walked along my path.
Mother Earth,
Thank you for your beauty,
And for all you have given me.
Remind me never to take from you
more then I need, and
remind me to always give back more than I take.

We have suffered a great loss at my place of employment. I will be posting comments, and rememberances from others here for a while, then copying it all and passing it on to friends and family when the time is appropriate. Thanks. Griz

Times like these remind us that we are all connected. When one dies a part of each of us dies too. When one hurts, we all hurt. The Creator was wise to have designed it this way because it is through this connection that we feel him. Griz

"He was one of my best friends and has taught me many things. How to fish for Sturgeon, how to fish for Stealhead, how to hunt for Pheasant, and many other upland game birds.
He was like an older brother to me, he took me under his wing at work and taught me how to be a prison guard.
I have a big empty hole in my heart, the saddness I feel is overwhelming and even with time I will never heal from the loss of Billy. He was and always will be a MENTOR to me." Poacher

Griz, my heart is so sad for the loss of your friend. What a beautiful poem you have posted and such wonderful words for your friend of heart. He will do doubt be missed here - though we know he has become part of all creation now and will seen and felt in each small breeze and in each bloom of a flower.

Griz, do you think this is the friend you were telling me about in my heart vision a few weeks ago?

His loss was sudden and unexpected. Billy was 43 years old. He passed quietly in his sleep Sunday night or early Monday morning. His memorial service is tomorrow. Billy was not only a friend to many, but a brother in blue. He will be missed. Griz

Billy has taught many of us usefull things over the years. He had the natural ability to teach whether it be making pepperoni, stuffing sausage, cooking a wild dish, hunting areas, fishing techniques, or even how to do something at work. I will miss his laugh and how selfless Billy was greatly. I friend like him can never be replaced. A brother in the outdoors such as he will always be remembered and revered!

Griz, I am honored to have your family of friends posting their thoughts about Billy here - and sharing with us not only the sadness of the loss but also the joy of his life and what you all have shared together. I have read them all and can feel what a wonderful man he was to have touched the hearts of so many.

We are of one heart.

There will be a Muster today for a friend. There will be many there. Some wondering why. Some to pay their respect. Some, because it's the right thing to do for a fallen brother. There will be a quiet Roll Call. All friends and loved ones accounted for, and then a moment of silence when Sergeant William Logsdon's name is called for the last time. Although Billy is not here to answer that call, each of us carries a memory of him. As one of the state's first Verbal Tactics trainers Billy has touched many lives. As a Transport Officer the public could look at Billy and see a dedicated professional always willing to put his own life in harms ways to ensure the safety of others. As a Shift Supervisor you could see a man always intent on the safety of his Officers and the completion of the daily mission. In this role Sergeant William "Billy" Logsdon shined like a diamond. We may have not always seen eye to eye on certain things, but I always respected the heart he put into his role as leader. Brother in arms, you will be missed.

~Lakhota Death Song~

I thank you for my life
And I thank you for my death,
I thank you for my heartbeat,
I thank you for my breath.
I thank you for my childhood
And allowing me old age
I thank you for my peace
I thank you for my rage.

For all of my successes
And from what I Learnt from them,
For all my many failures
And the strength to try again.
For all the tears I’ve shed
Through laughter or through pain,
I thank you for the sunshine
And I thank you for the rain.

I thank you for my children,
And those who went before,
I thank you for my memories
Of those who are no more.
I thank you for the food I ate
And the times of hunger too,
I thank you for the beauty
In a world that came from you.

I thank you for my visions,
I thank you for my dreams,
I thank you for the love and sex
That made my woman scream.
I thank you for the buffalo,
I thank you for the deer,
I thank you for the eagle,
I thank you for the bear.

I thank you for the thunder.
That brings with it the rain,
That fills the streams and rivers
So I can drink again.
I thank you for my spirit guides
Who help me talk to you,
And lead me well throughout my life
Ensuring I stay true.

I thank you for the forest,
I thank you for the plains,
I thank you for the Black Hills
Where you took away my pain.
I thank you for my victories
And, as well, for my defeats,
I thank you for the trophies,
And each day you let me greet.

I thank you for the kinship
And the honours you bestowed,
By making me Lakota
Following the sacred road.
I thank you for my horses,
That I rode to hunt and fight,
I thank you for the freedom
To do what I thought I might.

I thank you for the daytime,
I thank you for the night,
I thank you for my hearing and
I thank you for my sight.
I thank you for my enemies
I thank you for my friends,
All those at my beginning
And those here at my end.

The VFW hall was packed with people, and the line of those still trying to get in stretched out the door and down the sidewalk. I was outside having a smoke when a old man driving an old Mercury pulled up and asked, "What's going on?" I told him that it was a memorial service for a friend. The old guy scratched his chin for a minute, then said, "lucky fella to have so many friends." I nodded to him, then he smiled and drove away. I waited outside for the crowd to thin a bit, then went in to the bar and ordered a shot of Old Bushmill whiskey on the rocks. It had been a long day. I raised my glass to my friend, drank the whiskey, then said my goodbyes, and left. It was done. The one thing I have learned about death is that the living have to go on doing just that, living. Billy would have wanted it that way. Griz

I am stuck by the guy in the old Mercury - like an angel - that showed up to offer a few noteworthy words about Billy. How lucky, indeed, - and such wonderful friends.

My dad drove an old Mercury. His memorial was filled with people from all walks of life.

The day after his services, I was at the house and a very big old weathered guy dressed in ragged bib overalls and large mud-caked boots came to the door.

I invited him in and he asked for my dad. I told him that my dad had just passed away. "Oh no. Poor old guy..." he said shaking his head. It struck me as so sweet being that this weathered old guy looked to have many years on my dad.

"I loved that guy and I sure will miss him. He was such a great guy and sure had a lot friends," he said with a teary eye.

I gave him a hug and thanked him for the kind words.

During that whole time, many angels and loving spirits showed up in my life - and continue to show up.

I guess we can say that angels and loving spirits come in many shapes and forms, and as I discovered even a fly can be a loving spirit. And some angels wear ragged bib overalls and some may even drive old Mercurys.

If I Go

And if I go while you're still here...
Know that I live on, vibrating to a different measure...
Behind a thin veil you cannot see through.
You will not see me, so you must have faith.
I wait for the time when we can soar together again...
Both aware of each other.
Until then, live life to its fullest.
And when you need me,
Just whisper my name in your heart...
I will be there.
