Does anyone here own a Mamecon, the Playstation controller-shaped one by Hori that has a power lever in place of the D-pad and brake dial in place of the buttons? I've been thinking of getting one as I find the bigger controllers don't really add anything to the games. How do you find it?

Don't have one, but I can tell you that those bigger controllers add a lot to the game. Even if you put it on your lap, once you use it, you won't go back to the keyboard or gamepad. The small one looks allright, but you really need to lay your hands on the levers for the proper feeling. After all it's a train, not a RC toy.

as Mike say's, the biggest controllers adds a lot to this kind of game.

I can't imagine now to play this game with a simple controller...but Mamecon can be great for a "short trip".

I prefer big controllers but the mamekon is actually really nice and since I don't have a PS1 controller (got a USB MTC) it's a nice alternative that doesn't take a lot of space.

I bought mine at yahoo auctions! japan but ended with a box of ten mamekons >_<

Sorry but I hasten to disagree, hence my posting the question originally. I used to own the Dreamcast controller, Playstation one-handle controller and the PS2 Shinkansen controller, but ended up selling them all because I really didn't feel they added anything to the playing experience. The levers are far too light and plasticky and the controllers themselves are really lacking in robustness. Also (and particularly in the case of the Shinkansen and Type 2 controllers), I really don't think they justify the high prices.

They are expensive, because they are rare. On release date in Japan they were not so pricey. If you want something made of metal, (at least partially) get Ryojohen controller. For the most densha-like experience, get one of MCII controllers. They look more sturdy. Also you can make a custom yourself. In the final words, no matter how plastic they are, it's still way better than keyboard and adds a lot to gameplay.
