Following on from the Top 5 topic, how about that DDG that you could just never get on with? Mine would be Professional 2. The graphics and game engine are silky-smooth, but it has possibly the most boring set of routes of all the games. Shonan-Shinjuku Line? Seemed like it'd be interesting to go from Saitama, through Tokyo and on to Yokohama, but somehow just...wasn't. Tsurumi Line? What's fun about trundling around a backwater residential area at 5kmh, in perpetual fear of arriving a minute early again? The most fun I had was getting a straight game over by attempting to crash into the buffers at Tsurumi station at the end. The Kansai line? Covers a similar area as in Final, and that's a lot more enjoyable. Seto-Ohashi Line? Sure, crossing that big bridge had me eager with anticipation, but again it just wasn't that great when I actually got to it. Also, I'm sure everyone hates those speed traps, where you have to slow down from 90kmh to 25kmh with no prior warning. Incidentally, did you know the original (non-Taito Best) version contains a bug (I think it's on the Seto-Ohashi Line) where completing a certain diagram is supposed to unlock a new one, but doesn't? I'd say Pro 2 is definitely a letdown. The speed traps can throw you off and some of the routes are pretty boring (especially with some of the older trains which are slow). Kisha De Go also doesn't look very fun to me. It seems like they slapped steam locomotives and steam operation onto the standard Densha De Go engine. |

My least favorite would be the two that won't work on my Windows 7 PC: the original Densha de Go! and Densha de Go 2. And in the latter case, I'm even using the original CD from Unbalance! |

I haven't even played too many of the them, but so far I'd say that the least favorites are the older PS1 games. Since they're part of the start of the series, the more advanced ideas and gameplay (including notable improvements) haven't been introduced yet. |

What advanced ideas do you refer to? Some of them first appeared in Professional (PS1), like the scrolling "map" on the right that shows you what's ahead. Though granted it's not present on every line. I, too, got into the newer games first, so getting into the older games was difficult. But if you persevere, their charms shine through. Final can only dream of having as much variety as Professional ! |

I couldn't get into Kisha de Go either. I think it's for diehard steam enthusiasts only. It is interesting in that you can take old steam locomotives onto modern lines, but the restricted view and complex controls meant that it soon went on eBay. |

I have a new most-disliked - DDG3! A conversation with keneda2002 on a different thread prompted me to play this game for the first time in years, and I found it really lacking in both polish and substance. The fact that it's pretty much a straight arcade conversion means seemingly no unlockable content, and strange behaviour ingame, like when you start off again after stopping at a station, the brakes remain at whatever level you stopped at (as the arcade has the lifesize handles and they will obviously stay in whatever position you leave them). The worst is when you get game over from an ATS alert and choose continue, as soon as you're back at the station, the game shoves the power level to maximum, and you lose points before you've had a chance to do anything else! It's also horribly unfair; for example if you get a red light sprung on you, it wastes so much time that you'll end up getting game over *every time*. And the muffled sound makes it much more likely that you'll miss important information and end up losing time as a result! Plus each region has just two routes, and I found the driving to be really not much fun. There are nice aspects, like being able to choose the time of day and the unique graphics engine with more 3D models than any other title at that time, but overall I find it vastly inferior, even to some of the PS1 games. |
