This was a racing game, but I must admit I spent more time just driving around than I did racing. The original was set on the island of Oahu and you could drive over the whole islands road netword. Some didn't seem too impressed with the way the cars handled, but I never had issues with it. My favourite passtime was to pick up a car from one of the house you can buy to store the cars and drive to the islands raceway for some fast driving without other traffic getting in the way. You could do a race there but were free just to drive around. Good selection of cars as well. The sequel Test Drive Unlimited 2 is set on the island of Ibiza (or some of it) with plenty of roads to drive and a decent selection of on and off-road cars so you can drive pretty much anywhere (you could in the last but only in on-road cars). Again you buy houses for garage space and can even customize them. In the new game when you get tired of Ibiza you can jet off to Oahu which has been improved for the new game. |

I never paid attention to Test Drive Unlimited as I thought it was just another racing game. I never knew it was free roaming. It looks very relaxing (especially the location), judging from the videos I just watched. I've just preordered the sequel, thanks for the heads up!. |

I think with the new game you will be able to progress by exploring as you can find "pieces" to enable you to get special vehicles. I suspect that some racing may need to be done to buy some of the more exotic vehicles and more houses to store them in. In the original I found a relatively easy race that was quick and paid pretty well to finish buying all the cars and all the houses. Setting up Clubs (which I presume cost in game currency) can also allow access to some special vehicles. I like the idea of being able to be a passenger in someone else's car as they drive around, which is one of the features. I believe you can actually go around on foot though I am not sure whether there are limits to it. A nice touch is that cars with a folding roof can be driven top up or top down (in the original it was top down only for the convertibles). It does have potential for a slightly different driving game. |

Some news on this title... The release date has been put back until Q1 2011. Not sure if this is good news for the title or not. If they are leaving it longer, just to fine tune the game and make it work "perfectly" when it is released, that would be a good thing. If they can't get it to work and want more time to make it work is there any guarantee that the game will be as good as it could be. I suspect this delay has put people off the title. The original may not have been perfect, but it was a good single player game regardless of how you wanted to play, other than the fact that you had to do races to earn money to buy cars. The multiplayer had the disadvantage that if you wanted to drive around in convoy it was not that easy to connect to the same server as the others you wanted to drive with. |

I was able to get TDU2 yesterday. I've played it for approx 8 hours with a Logitech Driving Force Gt. If anyone has any questions, fire away.

The game was finally release early this year and, shall we say, had issues! I bought the game on the Xbox 360 when the price dropped to £18. There have been 2 mandatory downloads for the game which have addressed some of the bugs. The main issue with some people seems to be the car handling, but I suspect the majority of this is from people who use a steering wheel controller. I use the standard controller and have no objections to the handling of the cars. As far as a driving simulator, you have to be able to race reasonably well to progress through the races to make enough money to buy some cars and also some houses in which to garage them. There are around 100 cars in the game with another 15 available as an 80 MS Point download each. The cars vary from your hot hatch (VW Golf GTi Mk 6 which is one of the more "interesting" cars to master due to some lift-off oversteer). through to your supercar (Bugatti Veyron etc). Unlike the first TDU there is now no sign of Maserati or Lamborghini in the game, due I suspect to licensing issues. There are also some other notable omissions (the latest Corvette should eventually appear). In the early stages (passing license tests to enable you to race a particular class of car, doing races and discovering roads etc. will get you points to level your character up) you are restricted to the isle of Ibiza which has some varied environments from desert to forest etc. There are some off-road tracks to drive. Best done in an SUV though a couple of cars (the best starter Lancia Delta Evolutione Integrale and the Subaru Impreza) are as fast off-road as the SUV's due to their rally heritage. In various places are hidden wrecks (you have a wreck detector given you when, I think) you have comepleted licenses for the three types of car you use on Ibiza). There are two lots of ten wrects on Ibiza. Each ten giving you a free car that you can pick up from the Used Car Dealer. When you reach level 10 you get to go to Hawaii which seems to have less variety in the environments. There are another 4 cars to obtain from wrecks. With the last Mandatry update another two wrecks were included when you completed some car delivery missions. When you manage to complete all the races you ought to have a reasonable amount of cars bought with the proceeds of the racing and you can cruise with friends, which is what I do now. (I have played through the main "story" three times, though my latest save is the best, in that I now have all the houses (61 of them!) and every car including the two you can get from the Casino DLC (800 MS Points and the potential to win some money at Poker, Roulette and on the Slot Machines which do pay out more that you put in.). On my current save I managed to win one of the cars on the slot machines, but bought the other as I had no chance of winning the highest level Poker Tournament. The mainissue with cruising with friends is that getting into the same session with them at times can be somewhat frustratin though I have yet to fail completely (a reset of the game can help!). A nice touch is the ability on some of the car to put the roof down. You have the hardtop variety (Ferrari California and Mercedes SLK 55 AMG), softops (Aston Martin DB9 Volante, Audi TTRS, Mercedes McLaren SLR, Alfa Romeo 8C Spyder, Ferrari 430 Scuderia 16M and the two Casino cars - an Audi R8 5.2 and Spyker Aileron), the disappearing roof variety (Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport, Ferrari Dino 246 GTS, Ferrari 308 GTS Quattrovalvole and one of the wrecks... a Citroen 2CV!). You do get weather variations. Rain, Cloud and sunshine. A night time Thuderstorm with the thunder and lightning is rather impressive. Wetroads can make the riving more interesting! I rather enjoy the game and have put a good number of hours into it. It is only really after completing the game that you can make the most of the Driving Simulator part though. |

I bought TDU2 on sale on Steam and haven't touched it in months. The problem with the game is that some parts pretty much require specific cars, because other ones are not that good. (Don't pick the Golf GTI, it's horrible at cornering) |

With the car hadling (as Zeether mentioned), the last update corrected the problems with certain cars. The last update also allowed you to buy (as DLC and then with in game cash) three bikes, in the shape of a Harley Davidson (noce cruiser that tops out at 120 mph) and two Ducatis (if you buy just one get the Desmosedici as it is good for 191 mph). Not sure the advantage of the second Ducati (top speed around 160 mph provided you lean forward) as the other outperforms it in all aspects. Just for the completionists I suppose. As a first (as far as I can remember), the handling of the bikes is as good as the handling of the cars, though the car handling does not, seemingly, agree with everyone. With the new DLC cars, there are two that will stretch your in game resourse as one comes in at $2.5 million (Ferrari 599XX) and $4.5 million (Ferrari 250 GTO - a real classic). If the vehicles available to select in the Community Racing Centre are anything to go by, there ought to be another lot of DLC at some point with new cars and bikes... Atari permitting! |
