Yesterday (Sat 15th) was the last run for several of Japan's Blue Train overnight sleeper services. The Akatsuki - (Kyoto-Nagasaki), the Ginga (Tokyo-Osaka) & the Naha (Kyoto-Kumamoto) are the ones affected this time, although the Hokutosei (Tokyo-Sapporo), which I've used & which is immortalized in the PS1 game '19:03', reduces in frequency to 1 per day (there were previously 2 daily departures). Other sevices may be cut back later, as more folks choose to travel during the day on shinkansen, or by air. I've always enjoyed using overnight sleeper trains & I'm sad to see them getting cut back in Japan, especially after seeing services dwindle in the UK & the missed opportunity of overnight sleeper trains though the chunnel to Europe.
