You may find this useful as a basic course. I bought it a week or so ago and have managed to learn something from it (still on the second chapter):

Another recommendation I can give you is to check out the Tokyo Tourist Information offices at every bigger stations like Shinjuku terminal. There you can get an english city map and train map and of course some information too. It was very helpful for me, because of my bad eyes. All trains map boards on the stations are written in japanese with a very small english translation below, so for me it was better to use my own map.

Here is the official website of the Tokyo Government Tourist office:

Hi Butch,

Haven't been around for a few weeks so I've only just seen this thread. Best of luck in Japan. I'm well impressed that you already make a living from Ebay. I don't see how you can fail once you get to Japan with such a huge source of supply. As yamanote says though the trick is to find the backstreet shops with cheaper prices. As a tourist with not too much time i mostly had to stick to the main street in Akihabara (but still found some bargains).

I was only in Tokyo for a few days but I loved it and fully intend to go back again in next year or two. Don't forget to make time for some leisure trips - the Enoden line for example.

I found Tokyo quite hard work for somebody that didn't speak or read japanese but it is by no means impossible. Try and make a couple of friends quickly - even if the friendship is quite slight - I found 5 days with nobody to really talk to and limited familiar references was quite alienating. On my last day I went and ate in TGI Fridays just to feel 'at home' - sad eh ?

As another business venture perhaps you could offer guided tours of the games shops for those westerners that do make it out there.

THese (I did buy them myself) may be of even more help. Cover everyday items so potentially very useful:

thanks for that guys!

i'm not going now till january, as my friend mike is now coming with me for a bit.

it's a big weight off me now, knowing i'm not going alone, and he's getting a room in the same appartment as me.

i badly want those books, but i got my credit card details stolen on the net somehow and am waiting for new credit card.

thats what you get for not having any protection on your pc!, the buggers spent over £1000 with my card on various electrical sites! :(
