Conclusion This conclusion will conclude things. Yes. So after overanalysing both films like I always do, you can see that Avatar just lacks the depth of Wall-E. Wall-E is probably the smartest movie in a really long time. Not only can you analyse it well, you can see that it has messages worth talking about. Avatar has this as well, but Avatar just clearly says it. Movies just aren’t interesting when you tell people what it’s about. Certain movies have a mysterious nature behind them that are charming and make the film rewatchable. Wall-E was the film that Avatar should of been and probably was going to be 11 years ago when Cameron wrote it. It covers everything in Avatar just as well and in a more interesting fashion and about an hour shorter. Wall-E probably will last in the long run and be considered one of the best films of the decade and will go down with other Disney Classics like Lion King, Snow White, Toy Story, etc. However despite all this, I think James Cameron did a great job. Ya, it doesn’t seem like I think so, but he made an interesting experiment. He spent 10 years finding and creating a specific technology for filming the movie. I don’t think we’ll ever watch anything like Avatar in a long time. It’s the first step of making or breaking 3D technology and the first leap into digital cinema. If you look at 2009, you can make it like this. Inglourious Basterds was the last movie for Film and Avatar was the first movie for Digital. Yes we will still be using film and ya digital has been around for almost 10 years, but both movies represent the mark. As unrealistic and crazy as it sounds, in Basterds the scene of the film being set on fire represents the death of Film. The opening of Avatar of the giant ship can represent the rise of Digital. I mean look at this year. Many movies that didn’t need 3D are in 3D. Overall, I don’t think less of Cameron at all. You can’t really blame him for using concepts that have already been used or maybe dumbing down some things. When making a 300 million dollar film, you HAVE to make sure you make that money back. Now Cameron can return into movie making. Ya, Avatar 2 is planned, but maybe he can make something else. Something fresh, exciting and to his action filled, humorous dialogue driven style. With how successful Titanic and Avatar are, he can really make any damn thing he wants at this time. Overtime, Avatar will lose its steam, but it already made 2 billion dollars, not counting DVD’s and merchandise. It’ll be that movie in 30 years that kids will be like, this sucks and we will actually defend it. I know I will. I’ll walk up that stupid kid and say “hey, this movie is way ahead of its time. Without this movie you can’t watch Bikini Beach Murder 3D.” Oh God, look how old I sound…well…do you see how it feels? It feels interesting to already guarantee a movie will be ahead of its time and misunderstood in many years. We all watched an experiment unfold in film history. This is like watching The Jazz Singer and hearing dialogue in a movie for the first time ever. Maybe not that extreme, but what it comes to is Avatar was something extremely special in terms of visuals and movie technology. We’ll probably see hundreds of better films in our life, but it’s going to be a while before we find something that really pushed the boundaries visually and could possibly change the film making technology forever. |
