Name: Derek Juno (Ironic - same thing as the topic title) Date Of Birth: January 1st, 0011 U.A. Age: 20 Birth Place: Earth Genetic Type: Natural Faction: UCN Gender: Male Eye color: Green Hair color: Light brown Height: 5 feet 11 inches Weight: 165 lbs. Appearance: Your typically frail and thin young man. While he's not skin and bones, he lacks any obvious muscle mass on him. His face has soft features, often making a lot of people think he's a woman when all they can see is his face. Personality: Derek is a young man who is something of an orphan. Although born on Earth, he ended up growing up in the space colonies. He was born to a military family, and both of his parents ended up getting listed as MIA. Growing up, his delicate features often made him the butt of many jokes as he really did look like a girl aside from his lack of a bust line. As a result, he's socially reclusive and prefers to avoid contact with other people unless the mission at hand requires it. He's got a constant drive to prove his mettle as a "man", making him reckless, impatient, and at times just plain stupid. Biography: As noted earlier, Derek's parents went MIA during the last war's final battle. Before that event, Derek was enjoying life as a socially inept writer, his stories and novels being the only means he had to express himself to the outside world. Having grown up being a laughing stock because of his feministic appearance he has a strong dislike of large groups of people. In one-on-one conversations he can deal with people, but you gang up on him and he'll literally run away. Large gatherings have always made him uncomfortable. As evidenced by his refusal to attend his own graduation from high school. Because his parents died just as he was entering into high school, Derek shot through his final years of schooling in order to fast track his path into a military career. Finding the prospect of living in the modern world without his parents a terrifying prospect, Derek figured that the military was the only place he could go since all of his remaining family members served in the UCN military. He didn't join for revenge, or to free his people, or anything like that. He joined the military simply because it was the only place left he had to go. Ironically, Derek displayed great talent in combat. His reclusive nature meant he had a lot of pent-up aggression, and in combat simulation that anger would often build up to a critical level, with surprising results. Some even thought he might be a Coordinator, and so he was eagerly welcomed into the ranks. Imagine their dissapointment when he turned out to be a simple Natural, only with a lot of angst and a genuine killer instinct passed down from his Father. During his training Derek developed a need to prove himself as a man, as once more his military peers could not resist the opportunity to make fun of his delicate features and quiet demeanor. Proving himself in battle, he feels, is the only way to shut them all up once and for all. This is the goal he works for, above and beyond all others. Role-play sample: Derek sat quietly inside the cockpit of his trainer Zaku II Kai. One of the few models of that suit stripped down for training purposes, the Zaku II Kai was a popular choice as a training suit, namely because of the relative ease with which new pilots (like Derek) could control the mobile suit. This performance evaluation was the last one Derek would have to undertake before the final class rankings were assigned. Not that his ranking mattered to Derek much. He didn't have a shot at even getting into the Top 10 members of his Academy class. No, the reason he bothered to show up for this little test was because of his opponent. A guy by the name of Torias. In terms of build, he was a lot like Derek - except for once crucial difference. Torias actually looked like a man in terms of his facial features, the lines of his face more harshly angled. Torias wasn't an exceptional pilot in Derek's opinion, but Torias saw fit to hound Derek simply because of his more girlish features. Well, that sh*t ended today. He'd show Torias and everybody else in his class that he was no less of a man than any of the rest of them. And in Torias' case, I'm even more of a man than he could ever be. On the vidscreen monitor he looked across the simulated battlefield, over at Torias' Zaku II Kai. Although he couldn't see them, he knew his instructors were nearby, monitoring the pilot's performances. And somewhere behind them, there was his classmates. He could practically hear their cracks and bad jokes being shot at him when they knew he couldn't hear them. He knew everybody expected Torias to win, because on paper Torias WAS a better pilot than Derek. But Derek had not seriously tried to showcase his skills as a pilot. Doing so would have made people considering him as more of a freak than they already did. Derek did not seek that kind of unwanted attention. Still didn't seek it now, but this time he'd indulge his ego and smack this bastard down just like he so richly deserved. He merely stared at Torias' Zaku II Kai, grinning as he imagined the massacre he was hoping to perform in a few seconds... ----- "Do you really think Derek has a chance? That boy's been nothing but an embarassment since he walked into this Academy. He's never been anything more than an average pilot. A freak pilot, no less." One instructor who Derek correctly assumed was monitoring the coming battle asked his companion. The other instructor merely shrugged. "Some people are not so keen on showing everything they have right at the start. You should be well aware of that, or have you forgotten what happened when last we dueled?" The first instructor sighed, properly humbled. "Right. Nevertheless, I don't see how Derek could pull this off with one grenade and a sturm faust. Not against Torias' heat hawk and machinegun." The second instructor did nothing but smirk, and so the first instructor grumbled and muttered something under his breath, then reached over to a control console. "All right gentlemen - begin the test now!" ----- Derek had been waiting for that signal, and so as soon as he heard it, his Zaku II Kai suddenly rushed forward a step, and extended its left hand forwards towards Torias' unit. Torias was surprised by this action, and brought his machinegun up and around and came damn close to shooting Derek down prematurely before he realized that Derek's Zaku had no weapon in its hand. "Care to shake my hand and agree to a fair fight, or would that be below you?" Derek's question took Torias off guard, but it only took the man another handful of seconds before he came up with a scheme of his own. "No, there is nothing that is below me as far as you are concerned." Torias replied as his Zaku II Kai put away its machinegun, and extended its right hand to clasp the prooffered left hand of Derek's unit. Then, exactly as Derek had wanted, Torias' Zaku II Kai pulled on the arm of Derek's Zaku, dragging it forward as Torias pulled free his heat hawk as if to impale Derek right through the cockpit. But instead of stumbling forward, Derek's Zaku II Kai ran forwards. Derek had hoped Torias would be just that underhanded. Pulling free his sole grenade in his suit's free right hand, he let himself run forwards, stabbing his grenade at the torso of Torias' suit. Of course, the tug threw his aim off, but thankfully he still connected. His grenade didn't hit the torso of Torias' suit, instead the top end of the grenade smashed into the transparent visor which protected the Zaku's monoeye. The impact both depressed the firing trigger, and lodged the grenade inside the head of Torias' Zaku II Kai. Normally, an explosion like that at such close range would spell doom for Derek just as well as it would have with Torias, but by running forward Derek was able to shoulder ram Torias' Zaku, knocking it away. As Torias' Zaku II Kai flew backwards from the force of the ram, Derek pulled free his sturm faust just in case the ram knocked the grenade out of the head of the opposing Zaku. That did not occur, however, and just as the Zaku's backpack slammed into the ground the grenade exploded from within the Zaku's own head. The head, and a large chuck of the torso, dissapeared in a decently sized fireball. Torias' Zaku II Kai had been taken out of the fight in one blow. It took a good minute for the instructor who'd announced the start of the fight to announce that it was over, probably from the shock. These fights were typically short, as the pilots were limited to two weapons. But few fights had been a decisive as this one. And no fight I'd gone through before could have made me as happy as I am now. Derek thought to himself with a smile as he watched the simulated battlefield fade to black as the simulation was canceled. And as he thought about Torias' angry face that would probably be waiting for him once the simulator hatch opened, he laughed aloud. This was a good day for Derek. |
