yeah, but wild dragon eggs hatch because of availability of food, not if there is an escape plan. A hatchling can't escape far. the wings have to dry and it would still be very weak.

well there isnt a great abundance of food either

If the egg did not hatch, then the third book would be missing an important plotline. So much depends on it hatching and the Rider for whom it will hatch. So it would be kind of vapid.
