If you are referring to the excerpt in which Murtagh held Eragon and Saphira in place, I would need to say it may have been possible because both Eragon and Saphira were exhausted and hardly had any reserves of energy, therefore magic.

The reader comes across with the impression that Murtagh and Thorn were stronger in magic than our favorite duo, but they had not been in active battle. Even though we, the readers, are aware of this, continue to believe in their superiority. Looking at the situation without allowing emotions to muddle the facts, I would say Murtagh's only advantage can be the dark spells and magic he learned from Galbatorix. Added to this is the fact Eragon has NOT finalized his training with Oromis, so we may perceive the superiority. I insist, in order for the hero journey to be valid in the storyline, Eragon's unfinished training as well as his weariness worked against him. The evil side cannot be stronger. Just as in order for the Prophecy to be fulfilled, the Varden must be at the brink of losing the war, so that the Eragon may come in stronger and triumphant to end the war.

Here we go again. YOU NEED TO RESPECT OTHER PEOPLE'S OPINIONS!
There is something called perception and each person perceives things differently.
And if you stopped being so obtuse, you would see that "in appearance" Murtagh had the upper hand in the Battle of the Burning Plains.

But this dragon is no more, so I guess he is pretty powerless at the moment... :D
I'd say at the moment Galby is the strongest. How should he be able to rule otherwise?

I completely agree with Wanderflake. No one has been able to defeat Galby, so whatever dark magic he's using to keep and increase his power, it's working for him and now for Murtagh

I think it is Galbatorix and he is using the vault of souls to become stronger.

I think it is Galbatorix and he is using the vault of souls to become stronger.

As IMNC said, that is the common theory. Personally I refuse to believe it. I shudder each time I think of the soul being such a sublime part of a living being that Galbatorix could have access to the Vault of Souls when he is so evil, deranged, unholy and malevolent. I just think that Eragon is purer at heart and soul than him, thus, he will be able to access the pure power of everything good, (in the VoS) in order to save Alagaesia from falling into total darkness.

Why thank you , IMNC! I was in the philosophic mood, having just come out of the class, I was still under the Professor's spell.

However, it would be horrifying that Galbatorix would be able to access to the VoS to gain power. As it is, he gains power, he is also increasing his malevolence. No, I rather not think of the consequences this would mean for Alagaesia.

I don't think that Eragon would want to harness the same evil power that Galby is using.
