It seems CP used some ideas from Anne MacCaffrey's series, as I've been obsessing all the time.
the mind talking between dragon and rider, the lifelong bonding of both, the importance of the choosing of a love partner, (in a lesser degree though) and the effect of a rider losing its' dragon.

So what remains to be seen is how is it that CP will be able to work out a convincing way in which Eragon and Ayra finally get together without rushing it or dragging it.

Well, that would have the possibility of changing what gender riders like (to put it politely). I think it will just influence Saphira's feeling towards whoever Eragon likes.

If we are to take into account Saphira's very assertive reaction towards Trianna, I think she would let Eragon know her opinions or doubts for whatever person Eragon would have any interest.
I also doubt, the author would want to include sexual issues in his books.

I am under the impression you have read the Pern series, so you may be familiar with the description of the dragon's mating flight. I am not able to give details. It would be inappropriate to do so on a forum board.

Well, when I was rereading Eragon yesterday, Saphira said that her feelings toward whoever Eragon had feelings for would affect her feelings toward that person.

no, the mating will screw with their heads kinda like in Anne McCathy's books, but it may not be as severe.
