Yes, but they have to be alive. Remember the bit where he told the hore, "Rest brother" and took whatever energy the horse had left? In order for Eragon to "take energy from the soldiers that the magician was protecting", he would kill them once he absorbed it. That was also the reason why he didn't do it during the battle. Varden, dwarves and Surda soldiers were or mixed with Galbatorix's minion and he could not make distinctions at the time. So he couldn't risk taking their energy when the possibility was that he would also harm the lives of his allies.

You don't have to take all of their energy. Anyways, what's wrong with taking all of an enemy soldier's energy??? he would kill him anyways!!! Once he took over a magician's mind, he could find out which soldiers he/she was protecting.

It could work, but he might have a hard time concentrating in battle.

This one is for you I'MNOTCRAZY:

All our training and we still can't stop the Empire, raged Eragon. There are just too many soldiers! We can't keep this up forever. And Zar'roc and the belt are almost depleted.
You can draw energy from your surroundinds if you have to.
I won't, not unless I kill another of Galbatorix's magicians and can tske it from the soldiers. Otherwise, I'll be hurting the rest of the Varden, since there are no plants or animals here I casn use to support us. Eldest, 629

LOL! I love and know the books; there's a difference. The quote only clarifies the fact that if Eragon was to draw power while the battle was in full rage, he would not have been able to discriminate from who's energy he was to draw upon. ;)

Remember when Eragon got inside the magician's head, then discovered who the magician was guarding..... instead of killing them, he could use their energy to rejuvinate himself, Saphira, his crysatals, and then with the remaining strength, make a giant fireball, maybe inhance Saphira's breth, and take out the next magician.

You are correct; that was early on into the battle, when the Varden was still in an advantaged stagepoint. When Eragon realized his energy was almost depleted was much later in the batlle, where Varden and Empire were "intermingled"( the word I need does not come to mind) so he could not discriminate effectively who was at what position to draw energy from the soldiers.

I am sorry to say that the best way to win a battle probably isnt with a giant fire ball

making a fireball would take MUCH more energy fthat shaping fire and making it grow, as orimis said but he might not be able to shape Spahrias fire becaus ethe fire is so intermingled with magic

The fire is created by magic. Why wouldn't you be able to minipulate fire??? He can minipulate water, so what's wrong with fire??? He could also boost Saphira's magic so there would be more fire!!! FIRE!!! lol!

I think that it would be more effective just with the death words. It would probably be easier and not as dangerous :D
